When someone asks where you are from, or which college sports team you support, what do you say? Unscientific polls have been conducted over the years that indicate people from Texas identify with the state. I do, and was constantly reminded of it for the 17 years that I lived out of state.

Tonight, I began to think of the answer that I give when asked what college team I support. The answer is always the same. Texas. It is simple. It is recognized. It is respected. The response is sometimes an incredulous, "You went to school there?" "Yes."

What do you say when someone asks where you went to school?

I give my university name, which is not UT :( but someday it wil be! (University of the Incarnate Word)

When I played at Torrey Pines, I was wearing a Longhorn visor. The starter asked where I went to school. In my head, I was like "Duh, isn't it obvious." I said "Texas" and he then asked a follow-up question "Is that in College Station? The Aggies?" SMH....

Unfortunately, TAMU is the hot school from the state of Texas. My friend from the Bay Area who is not a sports fan at all asked where I went to school, I said "Texas." She also asked if that was Texas A&M in College Station.

...actually, my take is quite unique. when others are curious as to where i completed college.... i began in earnest to let them know that it was "texas southern university". but usually before i get the "southern" part out... my hands tend to automatically form into the texas "hook 'em" hand gesture. therefore, they may stop me before i complete the word "southern"... and ask me upon whether or not i support the "texas longhorns"? of course, there is a resounding yes... and after a bit of discussion, i began to realize that i did not fully state to them just where i completed college. and that's when it fully hit's me.... does it even matter? "T"

I didn't realize people in CA are that dumb. Surprising, b/c many are relocating to Austin for work. You'd think they'd know the difference between The University and aggy.

I do a lot of SMH....some know, some don't......

I only use one credit card. It is a University of Texas "Texas Exes" MasterCard. Got it through the Alumni Association 20 years back. Supposedly some small percentage of each transaction I use it for goes to some good UT related cause. The only reason I'm stating this is because of the reaction I've gotten consistently through the years. Usually the people I hand the card to are younger but they always say "Gee I sure like your card". It seems like that card commands respect and they respect that I'm a Texas Ex and went to school there. I have gotten a lot of nice comments about it over the years with never, not once, a disparaging remark. Those people think highly of me because I (was lucky enough to get to) attended the University of Texas at Austin. Just having that card gets me respect! That's all that needs to be said.

I would think that most people in California would remember the 2006 Rose Bowl, but then how many of them are college football fans? I'm surprised.

When ask what collage team you pull for Texas. That one word Texas carries a lot of weight and something the aggies can't say. The word Texas is a national name were the Texas aggies sounds like a hardware store. My friends y'all have a great day

I used to live out there too, and got the same more than a few times.

One would think those two Rose Bowls would have cleared the fog for them.

Big cosmopolitan cities like NYC, SF, LA, and Chicago are professional sports cities. Been to many PAC 12 venues and their college football ambiance is not as passionate as those in Texas and in the South.

IMO it is easy to forgive most things.

Especially in a setting where you are the new kid on the block, you cannot expect the locals to have crisp knowledge of all the details of wherever you came from.

HOWEVER, them asking if you are an aggy after you say you went to Texas is TOO DAMN MUCH.

You would think they would know that The University is located in Austin due to their techie backgrounds, maybe they are just being difficult.

Isn't that one reason that Ricky chose Texas? Didn't he love the passion Texans had for football, as well as The University and Austin?
