*****Texas vs. Notre Dame Game Thread*****

Check this stat out.

10 punts versus 8 completed passes for Texas.

Saw it on another site don't blame me if wrong.

Bobby Burton said this week that he didn't think Swoopes had it in him as a QB and that we should have switched to the spread instead of faster version of last year's offense. He also said Watson doesn't have it in him to run the spread.

If there is no improvement in the offense in the next couple of games then we need to switch the offense to fit Herard's ability. If that means that Norvell or Traylor takes over the offense that's fine with me. My understanding is that it's easier on the OL when you run the spread.

The last three games is beginning to show that we may have nothing to lose to switch from Swoopes and Watson, we can't do much worse.
As BevoBlake suggested.  Wickline at OSU ran the spread.  Give Heard the job and Wickline play calling duties.  Might as well give it a go.  Cant be much worse than watching offense try to pass 3 times then punt every freakin series.

Once I saw the Watson quotes about progress, I am have been trying to think of where the progress is on the offense

Anyone?
In fairness, we had more yards than we did against Arkansas. That's technically progress.

I think this is a really truthful post. My concern at this point is whether or not there is enough patience in Austin for Strong to legitimately rebuild. I think we're less than six years away but obviously it's up in the air.

People seem to think that I believe the Horns will win out the rest of the year. I don't. I think this is an average team with plenty of inexperience to hold them back. I didn't enjoy tonight. We played a terrible game. And I seriously question a lot of things about our team. Namely, the decisions the coaching staff made on offense.

But what I'm not going to do is support this notion that the program is doomed under Strong. A lot of people are reacting emotionally to this game and it's clouding their judgement. This program is not beyond repair. It is most definitely in repair but it is not beyond it.

As I said before, freshman were the highlight of this game. If that doesn't make you feel remotely good about 2017 or 2018, I don't know what will.

People have this idea that because we're Texas, we're entitled to a winning program each year. That line of thinking is why the program collapsed into over-valued mediocrity after the 2009 championship game. Strong is desperately trying to get rid of that entitlement. It's taking time. Like all good things go.

I'm not sunshine boosting. I don't think this will be the last time we're feeling this emotional about a loss this year. But I do think that this program is capable of a come back under Strong. And I will defend that opinion if people want to challenge it.
I'm glad you are finally coming around to finally questioning the decisions of the coaching staff on offense, but the decisions of the coaching staff have been glaringly questionable since very learly last season. I am absolutely not saying the program is doomed under Coach Strong, but he simply has to realize he can't continue to subordinate the interests of the program and the 80 scholarship athletes simply to extend Shawn Watson's career out of a misguided sense of loyalty to Watson.

Nothing will change for the better unless Coach Strong makes some tough decisions and makes change happen. Nothing makes me feel good about the program's future until I see how Charlie Strong responds to the need for him to make some changes. He can't talk about accountability and ending the culture of entitlement when he fails to hold the staff to that same standard. Strong says one of the keys to winning the game is running the ball and Watson gives the number one back two carries in the first half. But Coach Strong won't hold Watson accountable. That isn't "playing a terrible game." That is a coaching failure on Watson's part and a leadership failure on Coach Strong's part.

If simply do not want to think about the intermediate term future of the program if Cal humiliates the team like the team has been repeatedly humiliated since the beginning of last season. Lampkin, Catalon and Cherry have to be laughing their asses off right now. Its time people in charge quit making the UT program something that is laughed at.

I don't know what 'the records weren't indicative of the product on the field' means. You are what your record says you are. People were calling for Macks job because we were slumming in the 8-9 win neighborhood. THAT neighborhood makes the trailer park we're in now look pretty good.

And do the FR today make me feel good about 2018? 2018???? There are numerous examples of coaches old and new rebuilding in 2 years. 2018 would be Charlie's 5th. He ain't got that long.
I disagree with your opinion on records but I respect it nonetheless.

I share the same concern. Strong may not be here to witness 2018. Doesn't change my excitement about the play of these freshman tonight.

I think Nick Rose has improved……………………………………... but thats special teams

I haven't been a fan of Watson from the get-go but yes, I'd be fine if he wasn't calling plays next week. I agree with a lot of what you say about Watson. I don't want to get into the roster number discussion again. You and I simply don't agree on that issue and that's okay.

As far as Catalon, Lampkin and Cherru are concerned, I have no concern for their reaction to this game. Catalon and Cherry quit when it got rough. Lampkin couldn't honor a pledge. They're gone now. Best to them, but they're gone now.

Vance Bedford says "Malik was not any better or any worse than anybody else"
And Notre Dame was not any better or worse than Texas tonight. Okay, Vance.

Look, I get it. Part of being a coach is protecting the reputation of your players. Most coaches won't come out and dog on their Quarterback. Which is why we're seeing them defend Swoopes. But claiming Malik didn't set the bar for the rest of your defense is silly. Malik was the lone bright spot tonight, let him shine some.
