OT: Hand guns

Thanks for all the feedback. Based on looks, I really like the Walther PPK and Kimber Ultra Carry II. A bit pricy though.
LOL, even though James Bond carried a PPK, I am personally not a fan of that little piece. I have one myself, but the damned thing has been to the shop many times as it is hard to keep running with hollow points loaded in the mag. But maybe I just have a lemon.

I'm going to sound like a negative nancy, but I don't like the Ultra Carry II either. It is a beast to control and beats me to death at the range. My opinion is that most 1911 .45's should have a barrel length no shorter than 4".

If you are ok with the .380 caliber and a semi-automatic design, I highly recommend the Berreta 84F (sometimes called a Cheeta) model. It's been around for years and there is a reason for that - it's comfortable to shoot, the quality is excellent and fit's a womans hand beautifully. Furthermore, you can find them at very good prices as well.

And, if you want to make it a little more sexy, there are these:

Of course, what is your point?
Finally, NO ONE should be cavalier about shooting someone. And IF you have to pull a weapon on someone, you should be mentally prepared to to kill that person. And I will wager there is not a soul on this board that is! I've seen what the after effects have done to policemen that have had to legally kill someone. You will never be the same.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems as though you believe that no other individual on this board can fathom the effects that a firearm has both mentally and physically on the human body. Unfortunately you are incorrect. I don't want to hijack this thread anymore than I already have so I'll leave it at that.

The typed word - dammit.

Of course, those with first hand experience of a gunshot wound, been robbed or assaulted should have a definite idea of the trauma - both physically and mentally. My comment was mostly addressed for the benefit of those that have no idea of the physical and mental trauma of a gunshot wound and related deaths from one.

It wasn't meant to be a challenge.

Your opinions and life experience differ greatly from mine... And I strongly disagreed with your approach to the scenarios your stated. You head out my backdoor with my laptop, you better hope I'm not home. I will have my laptop back. But everybody has their place in life.
The Glock is the most "battle tested" in respect to govt agencies, law enforcement, and global use. The 1911 is at it's least practical in combat. The 1911, while pretty to look at, is not practical for the meaning of this original thread nor is a shotgun. You take your 1911(7+1) and ill keep my Springfield XD(16+1 x 2). It's all a matter of opinion but I wouldn't suggest this young lady carry a 1911.
We do disagree - a lot. If that laptop meant more to you than taking a persons life and the subsequent criminal and civil court trials you could be subjected to (trials you may or may not win, by-the-way) - well, that's you.

The 1911 has been around for 100 years and both world wars and Korea - the Glock does not even come close to being as battle tested. Also, if you have read all of my comments, you will have discovered I never recommended the 1911 for her.

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to say about it being the least practical in combat. If that is what you meant.

I have admitted that my preference is for this sidearm. And it's 8 + 1, by-the-way, and if it takes me 9 shots to deter someone, I needed to practice a helluva lot more than I did.

Finally, if you like something else better, more power to you.

Bersa makes the exact same gun as the Walther for about 40% the price . ..Kimber's are pricey. . .you pay a premium for the name. . .it's not unlike wine. . .easy to overspend but frequently no reason to but ego. ..

Come to Austin. . hit the gun range. ..rent a few . ..see what you like. . .also. . .hit a "girls with guns" type group and get an instructor to give you some shooting pointers. . .it will make a big difference. . .

Enjoy...guns are fun. . .

Just checked Bersa. Nice looking gun! I like the style of both .380 and .22. And cheaper price too! Thanks bro!

SFlonghorngirl,

I would not recommend a 45 in a compact. The recoil is stout. I have the Ultra Raptor and the Ultra CDP and they both have strong recoil and Doc Longhorn is right, if you practice with 100-200 bullets, your hand will take a beating! Now, I love these Ultra's and they are what I carry. You should consider the Ultra Carry 9 mm. Perfect gun but so is the MP Shield 9 mm. (The MP Shield 40 also has a kick to it!) Those would be the two I would recommend. Accuracy at greater distances is what you get with a longer barrel but the ultras are very accurate less than 30 feet.

A 380 is a small gun but will hurt your hand too since it is really small but the S&W Bodyguard already has a laser sight too. Nice little gun.

Best gun I own are two Les Baer 1911's. I have the TR Special and the Custom in SS. They are soooo sweet. I also think the Gold Match Kimber is a stellar gun and sweet to shoot.

Apologies, my round count was off...

Ya see, criminals escalate... So the person breaking into your home to take what you worked hard for may escalate it next time cause he chose you, and your passive response only propelled him to venture deeper into criminal activity... But yeah, why defend what's yours when you can allow some punk to take it because at some point he was a kid. Criminals thrive on such pacifists... Know the laws(god bless Texas), handle yourself accordingly and defend yourself... Nobody else will. IMO...

People claiming 9mm is not powerful enough obviously can't shoot. The police used them for years before switching to 40 cal and from what I understand the incident in florida that brought on the switch from 9mm to 10mm and then eventually 40 cal was way overblown by the feds.

Oh and one other thing. You won't ever have trouble finding 9mm ammo. Some of the other loads can be difficult to obtain sometimes.

I agree with you on the looks. I love the 1911, but it is NOT a beginner gun. The trigger on those things are light and easy to fire when you do not want to fire the gun. Misfires are not good. It is one of the reasons so many police departments went with the Glocks and the M&Ps. If you are not familiar with guns, I cannot overstate the need for a simple and reliable weapon. Guns are loud and can really drive the adrenaline through the roof. This is especially so at an indoor gun range.

I would highly suggest getting a class on safe gun handling and shooting. They will show you how to take care of your weapon and how to shoot accurately. If you have no experience with hand guns, it is more likely that you will shoot your self or have your gun taken and used against you if you are not extremely familiar with your weapon and how to use it. When I say "extremely familiar" I mean that you need to shoot at least a thousand rounds and have several hundred rounds shot just after taking your weapon out of your holster. Speaking of which, gun manufacturers make fake guns for you to practice safe handling and taking your gun out of your holster. If you have th money I would highly recommend buying one of these fake guns to help get yourself familiar with carrying a gun. That is assuming that you want to carry concealed.

My apologies if I sounded brusque. I have had to appear in more than one trial, as an expert witness, and I know the consequences of shooting someone are horrific and depressing - even if it was a justified shooting.

Kiddodoc - are you a pedi doc as well? If so, where do you practice?

Interesting you own a couple of Baers. I have an SRP and a Centennial as well. Both are 1 1/2" models. I'm considering ordering a SRP 4" Commanche. I, also, have a couple Ed Browns and a Wilson, but I prefer the Baers.

How do you like the SS custom?

Doc,

Have a couple of offices here in San Antonio.

I love the Baers especially the SS custom. Recoil hardly noticeable. Have a 2011 STI in SS that shoots awesome as well as a Caspian 1911. The Gold Match II in SS is close to the SS Custom Baer. That is impressive to have 2 Ed Browns and a Wilson but prefer the Baer!

I also have 2 Colt Bisley's that are 41 revolvers, a Colt Python 357, Beretta 9 mm with high capacity mag as well as a Two Tone Sig Sauer P220 from Germany. My carry pistols are the Ultra CDP II , SS ultra raptor and a 9mm MP Shield.

Thinking about getting the Baer Stinger too.

Where can you purchase practice ammos online? My brother says Academy and Wal-Mart sells out quickly or hardly in stock.

Outstanding - where did you do your residency? I've noticed there are several doctors on here - we should petition the mods to set aside a doctors only thread. :)

Yeah, I've looked at the stinger as well. And, don't get me wrong, the Browns are beautiful pistols - I got my Wilson from my daughter, as a Christmas present. I like the Wilson, but I think they are really overpriced. Hell, you can only do so much with a 1911 anyway. :)

I started carrying 1911's years ago and my intent was to get used to the heavy suckers. I succeeded in that endeavor. I only carry two pistols, today - the SRP and a little Seecamp .32 pocket pistol. My wife prefers a little S&W #638 .38 airweight - it fits her purses, it's lightweight and she can knock the fuzz off a gnats butt at 7 yds. with it. Personally, I don't like this gun because my hand is too big for the grip, but I can't argue with her proficiency with it and it can handle +P ammo.

As you can tell, I am a compulsive firearm collector. I can't help it, I just like them and always have - since I was a kid.

I don't know if you are familiar with IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association), but we have hosted and sponsored many of their tournaments here in Houston. If you aren't already a club member, you should look into these things. They are fun and excellent training for self defense with a sidearm. Plus, it's a great way to meet new friends that have the same interests that you do.

If you go use a rental gun at a practice range/gun shop they will have rounds for sale. Often times, gun range/gun shops have various models you can use to try out and see which one you like the best. It is getting a lot easier to find ammo, but it is still pretty bad. The stuff they sell when you rent is very expensive, but you at least get something.

I just got a bunch of 9mm ammo at Academy. You can always find when they get their Ammo shipments and show up a couple of hours early and try to beat the hoarders.

Just another reason to go with 9mm. You can always find it.

gunbroker.com is a good site. But if you get a 9mm you won't have trouble finding ammo most days at walmart or acedemy.
