OT: Hand guns

Here is a nice little revolver - made by Charter Arms, an American company. It is a little pistol that actually shoots 9 mm, which is hard to find in a revolver configuration.
I think you can buy this gun cheaper than the clip indicates - you just have to look around a little.

By-the-way, stay away from any handgun that is called a magnum - unless it is a .22 magnum. Magnums are loud with heavy recoil and not fun to shoot. And the ammo prices are outrageous.
Thanks! I don't know gun terminology. Revolver, magnum, etc...I don’t know what those words mean. First thing I will do is take a hand gun class. Then test out different models. If I like it, I'll get a Texas Driver's License, gun permit, and then buy a gun.

To save money you might try a pawn shop. Many specialize in guns and have a good selection. I too, agree that you should try several out to find the one you like and then start shopping. Good luck!

I highly recommend the 9MM M&P Shield. My wife has one and it is a great combination of size, quality and price. My wife has arthritis so we had to search around for a gun with a slide she could rack. The Shiel is a winner on all points.

Got my wifw a Smith&Wesson M&P9c. Its a compact, but will accept full size magazines. It comes with two 12 round mags for around 500.00

Lots of good advice above but when I first saw your post, I reflected on this

" Yes, very much so. I hate when my favorite teams lose to rivals. I haven't watched any tv or listened to any sports radio for the past 2 weeks. Makes me so sad and mad. I know, I'm a bad sport." :D

LOL....perhaps I should take boxing classes.

Still pretty upset. No tv or radio for another week.

After going through most calibers, my wife settled with a 45 acp. She loved how the Springfield XD sub felt and shot. She is dang accurate too. I was the last to bet she would end up with a 45.

I would go with a 9MM for the stoping power. I would also recommend the Glock G26. It is a subcompact and you can carry it any where. They also have very good purse holders. The reason I recommend the Glock is because it doesn't miss fire, shoots very true and is basically indestructible. The gun will take a beating and a ton of abuse, but will keep firing, unlike many other more expensive pistols.

SF, soon to be AustinGirl, I have had a S&W 38 for years. It has plenty of stopping power with hollow points. Thats the ammo that opens up when it hits a target. The important point, of course, is to hit the target.

Other guns were heavier and more awkward than I wanted to deal with if I needed it quickly.

The best advice that I ever received regarding a gun and self-defense came from my Dad. He told me to never pull a gun, if I didn't intend to use it. So if you plan to carry it for self-defense, make certain that you are willing to use it. You don't want to be the victim of your own weapon.

Good luck.

When I bought my wife her M&P Shield 9MM we went in the store to buy the Glock 26. It just didn't feel as good in her hand as the M&P which is much narrower. Fortunately for us the guy at Red's didn't just hand me the box when I told him we wanted a 26. He started asking my wife ?'s and showed us several very nice handguns. He then took the M&P out and said I saved this for last. For her it was a home run. If I were buying a compact for me I would likely get the sig or glock. But for a womans hands you can't beat the M&P. And I'm not too worried about it's ability to fire when the time comes either. Very well built firearm.

Agree with that 100%. If you aren't prepared to end someones life. Don't buy a gun. If you pull it you better plan on using it.

I don't think SF is unreasonable towards guns. It's not like DC which had an outright ban on handguns when I lived there. California is more a stickler for gun safety classes than Texas but I don't think that's a bad thing. Yes, there's only one decent gunstore in SF but there are some decent shops in the Bay Area.

As a total tangent, back my senior year at UT, we lived out near Reagan High. One of my roommates had his Corvette broken into so my other roommate came back from home with 2 handguns and a rifle for our apartment. I took the .22 for my closet. We had all three guns stolen from our place over Christmas.....
