2018 Recruiting Board/Thread

– Badara Traore: The big recruiting news last week was that ASA College (NY) JUCO OT Badara Traore officially visited Texas. He will have two years of eligibility left after he enrolls at a school in January. He’s a guy that doesn’t talk to the media much at all, so it has been interesting in terms of digging up information in this recruitment. He has only taken two official visits, Texas and Auburn. But the one to Auburn was back in July, so I’m not sure how big of a threat the Tigers are in this one.

I haven’t gotten much out of Traore personally, outside of him saying the Texas visit was a good one and was a different experience than he’s used to in a good way. Right now his recruitment is just starting to heat up and he’ll take some more visits.

I spoke to one of his coaches and was told LSU is a school that will definitely visit and they’re a real threat here. We also talked about what kind of player Traore is. He told me “Badara is a hardworking, humble, competitive  young man. He has prototypical size and frame and plays with great knee bend at 6’8. He has experience at both tackle positions and excels in pass protection. He has loads of potential, very coachable and wants to be great and is a guy that will definitely be missed when he graduates.”

It’s always interesting to talk with JUCO coaches, because they’re more honest overall when talking about their guys as a whole compared to some HS coaches. – (Andrew)

– Josh Landry: Last night I talked with Hou. Lamar (TX) Baylor DL commit Josh Landry. Texas has been in constant contact with him recently and he told me he is set to officially visit Texas on December 15th. He wanted to unofficially visit Texas for the Oklahoma State game but wasn’t able to because Lamar had a Saturday afternoon game.

Right now Landry says he is still fully committed to Baylor. Though I feel confident in saying Texas could flip him if an offer comes. And I think the Texas staff feels the same way. With Ronnie Perkins committing to Oklahoma, Landry is a guy to watch even more moving forward. – (Andrew)

– Ayodele Adeoye: Earlier this week, I spoke with Texas LB commit, Ayodele Adeoye who says his current plan is to first take a couple of visits and then make his decision. Ayodele will visit Texas on November 11th when Texas hosts Kansas. He also says he plans on visiting LSU. Those are the only two visits he has planned.

Here are the important things to know.

– LSU and Texas have an advantage in that Ayodele’s brother played for or was recruited by both Arranda (LSU DC) and Orlando (Texas DC) so his brother will vouch for both of those coaches. That has always been the draw for him to Texas and LSU. I am told that when word went around that Ayodele was considering a flip, Ayodele’s brother stepped in.

– Texas also has the advantage of Ayodele’s uncle living in Houston. He visits there from time to time.

OU has a few advantages as well though.

– Ayodele wants to be a pilot and OU is the only one of those three schools that has a aviation program. That’s actually a pretty big deal.

– Another draw is that the Sooners have let Ayodele know that they will have an opening at the MLB position. Ayodele is an early enrollee. The Sooners have told Ayodele that current freshman LB, Kenneth Murray will likely get moved to the WILL spot leaving the MIKE open for competition.

– The commitment of Ronnie Perkins obviously works in OU’s favor. The situation went from Ayodele recruiting Perkins to Texas to Perkins recruiting Ayodele to OU. Both guys are alphas though, so I don’t know how much this will really factor in.

Bottom line here is that Texas held off a flip and will get the visit they wanted. That is incredibly significant for Texas. – (Super K)

Team Note | Collin Johnson: As you all know, for the past few weeks he has been repping with the second team. I’m told this week he’s been repping with both the 1s and the 2s.

Adam Plant: A new defensive line name to know is Adam Plant (Bishop Gorman | Las Vegas, NV). Plant says he will officially visit Texas later this season. Plant told me that he’s actually been in touch with coach Giles since last February.

The renewed interest in Plant is connected to the recent commitments of Brown and Perkins. However, do not expect Texas to relent on Perkins or Brown anytime soon. I am told that Landry is still the most likely late offer.

– Cam Rising Injury Update: Spoke with the father of Texas 2018 QB commit, Cameron Rising. In case you missed it, Cameron suffered a knee injury last Friday. It was an initially thought to be a ACL tear. However, the MRI came back negative.

It was a knee injury but the nature of the injury will only require 6-8 weeks of recovery time. As such, Rising will be good to go by the time he makes it UT in January. – (Super K)

I am going to guess we lost Cook after last night.

LSU lost too but atleast they scored more 24 total points in the last 3 games.

I bet our defense is growing tired of this inept offense and why shouldnt that hold true for potential defensive recruits as well.

We may have; however, our offensive problems are not due to talent, either receiver or qb. Both Ehlinger and Boo can get the job done.

The system is not the problem, either. Sure, the system can have tweaks once the season starts, but there is no way to do an entirely new reinstall.

We have not had enough depth on the offensive line since Charlie dismissed players his first year. I’m not saying he was wrong, just stating a fact. It bit us last year, and it has bitten us worse this year.  No one could run behind this line.

When we had Conner, Vahe, MacMillon, and Shack  there was enough leverage to run  No more.

I’m just glad to see that Texas is taking care of it’s players, win or lose. That’s not true of all teams. I’ve heard the tales from players whose careers were shortened.

I’m surprised that most in this group rarely acknowledge that success begins with both lines, both offensive and defensive.  It’s usually women who overlook this critical aspect of the game. What gives?

Hook ‘em!

Java good points you forgot Brown did not recruit enough OL men for adquate depth. Agree both QBS are good but neither is outstanding.

Do not know if it is the players talent or the coaching, but Texas does not make the plays that other teams make in the passing  and running game.

Who isnt acknowledging the OL woes?   I am pretty sure EVERYONE agrees on this.

The big question is how good would we be if Hudson, Conner, Rodriquez didnt get hurt and Hodges and Delance didnt transfer due to alignment issues with the new staff.  I cant see how our OL could possibly be any worse than the shit show it is now.

1.  Tristan is terrible, cant wait until he grads

2.  Cuney is terrible, I doubt he starts for most JUCO teams

3.  Shack gets pushed around even when he plays.  Bad ankles since his freshmen year.

4.  Kerstetter is terrible (he shouldnt be playing as a true freshmen, he needs time to get size and technique)

5.  Brewer is a terrible blocker.  (he doesnt even have the size to block anyone outside of a DB, he needs time to bulk up)

2016 Texas vs ou depth chart was:

Ct23LcZVIAAxa2w.jpg

The PROJECTED depth chart line up was:

LT: Connor Williams, Junior

LG: Patrick Vahe, Junior

C: Jake McMillan, Redshirt Junior

RG: Zach Shackelford, Sophomore

RT: Denzel Okafor, Sophomore

TE: Beck

https://247sports.com/college/texas/ContentGallery/Depth-Chart-Projection-A-summer-snapshot-of-the-Texas-offense-53275093

Now its 2 of the original 5 and one of them is playing another position.

LT - Tristan

LG - Vahe (returning starter)

C - Cuney

RG - McMillon

RT - Kerstetter

TE - Brewer

One of the biggest issues is the turnover in OL coaches.  We have had 3 OL coaches in 4 years.  How the hell can we expect  consistency in the OL when we are basically replacing the OL coach every year.  That doesnt help recruiting either.

2010 - Mac McWhorter
2011 - Stacy Searels
2012 - Stacy Searels
2013 - Stacy Searels
2014 - Joe Wickline
2015 - Joe Wickline
2016 - Matt Mattox
2017 - Derek Warehime

DMAC, I think you are a pretty sharp guy who knows football. So, would you explain something to me, please?

Given that our offensive line is a shambles right now, that only Vahe and McMillan were original starters, and that Tristan and Cuney couldn’t even beat out freshmen, why criticize any other component of the team?  How can you evaluate a qb working behind this line?  A rb?

I maintain that you can’t.

Please understand that I’ve read everything y’all have written and understand you are frustrated.  It just doesn’t make sense to me to blame players who by necessity must rely on the offensive line.  It isn’t logical

Thanks for listening

Ok where exactly are you deriving this assumption that I am blaming the QB or the RB?

All I said was Sam is the better QB for this offense.  Want proof?  Ok here goes.  Sam was our leading rusher for every game he played.

How many rushing yards did we have last night?  9 f##king yards on 32 carries.  I almost laughed when I typed that.

Sam may or may not of had anymore but I would imagine he would have since he ran 100+ in 2 of his games vs top 10 teams.

I have always been a huge fan of Shane and even defended him when everyone wanted Sam.  Shane isnt the run threat Sam is.  Thats not opinion thats a fact.  If you cant see that well peace to you.

Notice the trend here:

Freshmen Shane comes in for Tyrone (who looks timid like hes about to get hit)

Shane is a hero.  Shane gets hurt.  Shane looks timid like he is about to get hurt again.

Sam comes in for Shane rinse and repeat.

This all leads to one thing.  Our OL sucks but it sucked 2 weeks ago as well when Sam was moving the chains with his feet.

Obviously this isnt the answer anymore he got a concussion surprise surprise.  I guess we need to recruit an OL or 20 QB's

Hell even Herman was asked why Shane isn't throwing.  Watch his post game conference in regards to the 1v1 is open its not covered.  Herman has said repeatedly Shane is holding onto the ball to long for weeks.  Even Shane said it after a game, cant remember which, that I need to get the ball out.  Watch the post game Herman talks about it.

I feel for these QB's they are getting killed and to think Sam bought them donuts

We have had these chicken and egg speculation arguments for years Java.  I remember we had this argument over Charlie.  It was always lack talent or getting his guys in for every inept showing.  You finally gave into the dark side after Kansas but I always admired your persistence that Charlie was the guy for 2.75 years but hated it didnt work "the good guy".  Welp, Charlie said this team would be in contention for a national championship this year regardless who was coaching.  I guess he meant defense.  So he was 50% right.

I get it Java you are the "rah rah go team" type.  You defend every inept showing with some sort of logic.  Its admirable.  You and I will just to agree to disagree because its been that way for 4 yeas now.  You are patient and I admire that.  I am not patient and that is ok too.  Its been nearly a decade of a shitshow and rebuilding so you can spare me the self righteous shit.

Mack Brown and Charlie Strong didnt recruit the OL necessary.  It is what it is but I am wondering with Delance and Hodges(starting for pittsburg) hadnt transfered due to alignment issues things might be different.  Hodges would be starting right now.  So why not make it work with guy instead of pulling the scout team bullshit to drive coaching narrative?  How has that worked out for you TH?  We have seen this with Collin Johnson, Hager and others.

How many advantage points does the HC get for being able to be understood when speaking? Can the state bird of Louisiana defeat the state bird of Texas?

I don't think you think the same way recruits think. I've never heard of any recruit sitting down and counting points scored over the past 2-3 games.

I read a story by ESPN the other day. I can't believe an editor allowed it to get to print. Basically, the writer asserted that Texas would fall apart because of losing games so closely. What do you even do with that? Whats the alternative? Getting blown out game after game and this would hold the team together? I think the writer is on crack.

Cook did say how Texas performed was part of his consideration.  So I guess 0-4 is irrelevant.

I'm not DMAC, but I happen to agree with him on this.

What you said is true. But given what kind of OL that is – Sam plays QB better behind that line than Buechele does.

Sure you can evaluate that QB. Same as we evaluated Colt when he spent his years running for his life and creating something out of nothing.

I don't think there's room to "blame" a QB. They are what they are. The coach who plays this is who would be blamed. But, maybe Sam wasn't completely ready yesterday and thus, wasn't put into the game. Not sure and they haven't said.

Makes you think our NFL prospects might bolt with the prospect of another horrible year for the offense.

Did you catch the Malik interview after the game.  His facial expressions and answers with "we just have to push through it" with a smirk.

I came away with the feeling he is gone next year.  Cant say I blame him.

I completely don't get the conspiracy you guys are spinning. The OL is decimated with injuries, . . injuries that heal.

You could at least consider the sage advice that repeatedly proves true – the only thing certain in life is change. Things don't stay the same no matter how badly we want them to stay the same.

I don't think most recruits think they're seeing the best Texas has or will have. I think they understand what we're up against for the time being.

Malik will be gone because he's the best linebacker in all of college football.

No one is spinning a conspiracy man.

I know the talking points are

"We are the defense we relish bailing out our offense every chance. Nah its no big deal offense if you guys cant get a first down, no problem"

Coaches koolaid.

Now back to reality.

I might be mistaken but even you were saying this same thing in 2013 when our defense had to carry the team.

It has to be disheartening on the defense players who play lights out only to lose a game because we cant score more than 14 points the last 2 games.  Thats not a sin its only natural.

No, that would not have been me. We haven't had a good defense in the 2000s, IMO.

For your last sentence, I don't know what to say. You just played the best defense in the conference and you can't even consider that because you're so upset about the overall loss. You are totally injecting your emotion into your logic.

You say defense plays lights out as if the offense is not. Your assumption that this is the case leads you to push this "revolt" conspiracy. Yes, its a conspiracy because it is not born of fact and you're attempting to push it as truth. But it defies logic.

The defense hasn't dealt with many injuries this year. And Malik, if he DID actually believe what you're pushing, need only remember his previous experience at being a non-factor in a defense that couldn't stop a cold.
