DKR may have been the best and the worst thing that has happened to Texas football.  The best is obvious, the worst not so much.

What he has done is imbue UT, and its fans, with the idea of rolling the dice on "potential" DKR's happening again.  Herman is a classic example.  So was Strong.

I fall on the side of just hiring the best EXPERIENCED, WINNING coach we can find - a Saban, Harbaugh, Myer, Dabo type.

The first person that says "oh, hell no, these coaches wouldn't leave their job for a crappy one like UT" gets his Longhorn degree taken from him.

There is no such thing as never - when talking HC positions.  The successful ones all have egos and all believe they can turn a program into a powerhouse.  And UT is the plum of the country - crying for one of these egotists to take over.

Need I bring up Saban?

I have cooled my jets on Herman after his interview last year where he was a total jackass.  That being said one has to wonder how well Herman would be doing this year with the resources and talent the horns have.

Yeah, I listened to that interview LY and you're right - Herman was a jackass. He deserves a kick in the nuts for that exchange. He won't survive in ATX if he's that thin-skinned.

I'm still high on him as a HC, though.

He tells me there is a new hot name among the BMDs involved in a search for Charlie's replacement. That name is Les Miles. I almost threw the phone. I actually got mad at him. He's like whoooa there, I'm just relaying what I'm hearing.

Thats right, Les Miles is in the mix. All no-offense, riverboat gambler, can't develop a QB Les Miles.

Good news is . . . Hermann is still the top choice. That has not changed. Another name I heard mentioned, but not prominently, was Harsin.

Just my opinion and nothing else, but Les Miles is not even in the picture. If Strong is let go, and that's a big if, it's Herman and then Harsin.

IMO Strong's biggest mistake was bringing in his previous staff from Louisville but looking back if you're a coach and you have a system that was working at Louisville, why wouldnt he think it would work here. Charlie was a hot commodity like Herman is now, I am not convinced that Herman is our guy or if there is a coach available now that is a Tier 1 type coach. Satan, Meyer, Harbaugh are never coming to Texas, let me repeat NEVER, I feel Texas is a program that is in disarray, no matter who we hire, it seems we will continue to be plagued by the same issues

I suppose I'm an apologist since I'm not willing to settle for anything but an elite replacement. I don't have a standard for UH or Herman in relation to Strong and my admited lower standard because their current situations are incomparable. Give Texas the UofH schedule and they have one loss and have an outside chance of the playoffs. If anyone feels that scenario is not fair you are all but admitting that Herman is having success in a weaker arena which is why I'm against making that gamble for a second time in a row with a coaching hire. It's also different coaching a team that has a big target on their back. No one takes Texas lightly regardless of record. When you get every teams best the room for error is dramatically decreased. I guess I do hold Herman and UH to a different standard after all. If you want to coach varsity football you better win all of your JV games convincingly or at least be more successful on the JV level as the current varsity coach was or don't apply. If Herman wants the Texas job let him cut his teeth at LSU or USC we don't have time to let him learn big boy football. I'm not even going to argue the Harsin suggestion. I hope that was a joke. If we think an offensive guru is what we need hire Leach

Oh I hope Les Miles does not end up here at Texas as he is Fred Akers and RC Slocum towards the end of their career.  As far as Herman being our next Coach...well like others I am not sold on him either.  I think Houston's QB  is more the reason for their success especially when the play breaks down and he uses his legs to create a play.  Without Ward ,  no one would even be talking about Tom Herman.  That is just my opinion.

Les Miles could work with 2 conditions:

1) bring an equivalent defensive staff to what he had at LSU

2) keep Gilbert as OC and keep Les completely out of the offense.

Essentially the same thing people are hoping Charlie can do if he stays...

Miles is not my choice for HC. but if he were at UT this season I'll bet the Horns wouldn't be struggling just to be bowl eligible.

Here are my thoughts. 

The "Give Texas the UofH schedule" scenario is without question an unfair comparison. 

Here are the better/fairer question(s).

What would be Houston's record this year with Charlie Strong as the head coach?

What would be Texas's record this year with Tom Herman as the head coach? 

Whether you believe it or not, Texas has far more talent on their team this year than Houston and it's not even close. Not only that, with a better team than last year and what turned out to be an easier schedule, Texas should have only 2 or 3 losses this year. 

You say we don't have time to let Herman learn big boy football yet that is exactly what we are letting Charlie do. And I'm pretty sure that Meyer and Saban didn't win all of their JV games convincingly either.

Other sites hinting that Strong stays. Nothing definitive but it's sure moving that direction. Losses to both KU and TCU would obviously alter that course.
