Tom Herman Era Off to a Rough Start: Maryland 51 - Texas 41

It's not clear to me why people keep saying "we have more talent than" team X. This is essentially the same team that lost to Kansas. We're just not very good and it's going to take a while for Herman to get his guys in there. This game doesn't burst the Tom Herman bubble for me as much as it simply bursts the 2017 bubble. This isn't a team that's competing for the big 12 title this year. Too many key players are scarred from years of losing.

This team needs to visit OZ. Maybe the wizard will give them a heart. I'm sitting here now watching aggie clean UCLA's clock and getting ill at my stomach.

Alright, I'll throw in my .02

TL;DR Tough loss, season's not lost yet, don't fire Tom, Shane can still be the guy, coaches screwed us on offense, players need to man up on defense.

Nick Saban, in his first year at Bama (after many years experience, a BCS Championship with LSU, and NFL head coaching experience) came in to Bama, went 7-6, lost 4 games in a row (including one to Louisiana-Monroe), lost the Iron Bowl, then scraped a bowl win against Colorado in some mediocre bowl.  He went on to build the most dominant program in my (short) lifetime.  Is Tom Herman = Nick Saban? No, probably not.  But Saban didn't have the fairy dust either.  Is Tom Herman "the guy"? I sure hope so.  I still think so.  But you can't project a coach based solely on one season, much less one game.  Let's see where they go from here.

I disagree with you guys saying Shane isn't "the guy" and doesn't have "the moxie".  I don't know whether he is or not, but I certainly think that he still has the potential to win A LOT of games in burnt orange.  SHA, you're a former QB, so maybe you know better than me...and I don't remember watching those games with Major at QB...but did he have to deal with his OLine not being able to block 3-4 guys, a defense that dropped 7-8 defenders all game long because his OC called 60 pass plays (52 pass attempts plus the times Shane scrambled on a called pass) and made no attempt to establish a running game, or a defense that couldn't stop exactly what they knew was coming when he seemed to will his teams to victory? Because that's what Shane had to deal with this week and I felt like he played well enough to not lose his job (not a ringing endorsement, I know, but he didn't play perfectly and definitely has room for improvement).  I felt like he made mostly accurate throws (although it seemed like his deep throws were not as accurate as they were last year, but we know he has the capability to make very accurate deep throws), was able to hit the guys he was targeting, made good reads (hard to do against 7-8 in coverage), and ran hard when his number was called.  I think calling for him to be benched in favor of Sam is premature and wouldn't have changed the outcome of this game.

A lot of people on other boards are also talking about "is it the players or the coaches?" A good question considering that the players have been the constant over the past 3-4 years.  I think on offense, it was definitely the coaches.  Not establishing a run game, calling empty set pass plays on short yardage situation even when they were dropping guys into coverage, and not sticking with things that were working.  I think the offensive skill players played really well (other than RBs b/c they didn't get the opportunity).  OL needs schematic work for sure.

Defense? It's hard not to look at the players.  The whole game DL was not winning their 1-on-1 matchups to create pressure, LBs were filling wrong gaps, DBs that are supposed to be able to cover were losing matchups down the field and giving up 3rd and longs (I'm looking at you Kris Boyd), and there was a lot of diving at ankles instead of actual tackling.  I was most disappointed on Saturday that we were out physical-ed, because all we heard during the offseason was that the coaches' goal was to field a team that was physical and hard hitting, and I saw the exact opposite of that, especially on defense (even with the occasional good play made).  I don't know enough about defense to comment on their scheme, but I've seen a lot of people comment that it was very complicated and complex, probably to our players' detriment.  Fixable issues? I hope so.

Don't give up the ship just yet.  One game does not make (or unmake) a season.  The season is not yet lost.  Herman's tenure as Horns HC is not yet lost. Our recruiting class is not yet lost.  Hold fast, I have a feeling that we'll be just fine.  I'll be watching for improvement against SJSU.  For those of y'all coming to Cali for the USC game, I'll see y'all in LA in 2 weeks.  Hook 'Em! \m/

Herman was talking about how they didn't know how this team would react to adversity.  Well, I would say they were handed a heavy dose this weekend to overcome.  The loss to Maryland and now Aggie blowing out UCLA.  How does this Coaching staff react to it?  We have 11 games to go and I'll guess we'll find out.

My belief that Texas has more talent is based on recruiting classes. Composite rankings since 2013

2013 Texas 17 Maryland 38

2014 Texas 17 Maryland 41

2015 Texas 10 Maryland 47

2016 Texas 7 Maryland 41

2017 Texas 25 Maryland 18

Either the recruiting experts are wrong or we have collected better talent than Maryland. I believe we have squandered more talent or at least failed to maximize the talent. That is a coaching problem.  Most agreed that Strong left the program with far better talent than when he arrived. It shouldn't take 5 top 5 recruiting classes to beat Maryland. If Herman can only win with his guys then he better change his strategy or alignment to fit the talent he has on hand or his guys will never make it to campus.

Commented on Fox few minutes ago, 3rd quarter of Aggie-UCLA game...

A&M started the last three seasons, 5-0, 5-0, 6-0 and finished all three 8-5.

So not how you start but how you finish.

Strong's teams could ever improve as the season progressed.

Maybe I'll back off the sour grapes panic-button and see what happens here on out.

Crazy opening weekend for the season.
Baylor losing to Liberty Flames, 48-45
UNLV losing to Howard Bisons, 43-40

Agroid blowing a 34 pt lead in the final 20 minutes, giving up 35 unanswered to lose 45-44 with 20 sec left on the clock.

Then there's the Texas game.

How bout everybody get a mulligan for the first weekend.

But in other news at least Aggy gave up a 34 point lead and lost
That made the weekend a little more tolerable. Honestly, the aggy loss was an epic meltdown. 35 points and 292 passing yards given up in the 4th qtr

This ^^

Felt like the D started out well in the first couple of drives with the INT and the 3 and out and then fell back into old patterns once they had to deal with adversity. Maybe it's more of a mental thing, but whatever it is, I hope the coaches can fix it ASAP

I guess it's possible the week of practice for Texas, Baylor, and A&M lacked a bit of focus. Presumably quite a few of the players were affected in some manner by the floods in and around Houston.

As an individual temporarily displaced myself, I found it hard to focus on much of anything last week. It would be only be human for these kids to do the same. Don't get me wrong, Texas still has problems they're going to need to fix but in hindsight I can see how the flood situation may have been a barrier this week.

Maybe we just tried to put a roof on a house before the walls are up. Looked like they may have been overthinking and afraid to make a mistake.

Nearly everyone overlooked Maryland, including the coaches.

We're all disappointed and upset right now, but I believe we'll be fine soon.  Hang in there friends and hook those mini-Trojans (Spartans?).  Oops...there I go again.  Don't want to overlook them, too...

Is there any hope that Malik can be taught which gap to fill? When he came here we hoped he was the guy that would give OC's headaches and nightmares trying to figure out how to contain him. From what I have seen he is the one guy on defense that cn be completely ignored because he will take himself out of every play....I take that back. He will have one great play early where he drills a guy and then takes the rest of the game off.

I have to admit when I saw the ags beating UCLA 44-10 in LA I felt a gut wrench especially after watching our fiasco on Saturday.

It is a brighter day seeing that the hapless ags blew a 34 point lead in 19 minutes.

Herman better pull his arrogant head out of his ass and get our horns prepared.

Both MJ and Wheeler have this issue.  3rd year players.  Its mind boggling.

I was in Houston for Harvey...I needed something to make me feel a little better...the Longhorns weren't it...

11 penalties for 117 yards...this is the thing that concerns me more than any other.

I enjoyed the aggy game.

OU still sucks.
