Tom Herman Era Off to a Rough Start: Maryland 51 - Texas 41

At least we have a couple more games until conference play...... hopefully this loss was strong enough medicine for the team and the staff and we'll make a recovery.

SHANE WASN'T THE ISSUE!!!!!

Being forced the throw 52 times not including the 5-8 that looked like passes that he has to scramble is the issue

The Oline is an issue

The Dline is an  issue

No, Shane wasn't THE issue.

He also wasn't, and probably will never be, the difference maker.

We have talent. A lot more talent than Maryland. This was 100% poor game planning and worse personnel decisions. We don't have a TE so why use one. Spread them out and run Warren down there throat. JV coaching staff. Herman "we can't sprinkle magic dust" too bad because it doesn't seem like the coaching is any better. I bought the hype and that's all it was. I didn't see any players catching cramps so we obviously had champion level hydration. 51 pts!!! Longhorn faithful welcome to Groundhog Day for the 4th straight year.

I am not going to vent.  I don't see why you have to have a tight end. You can use a running back to block and catch passes. It seems like a nonstarter to me.

Time for Tom to give that Sacred Cow up.  I think he will watch the film & see what we saw. He may never admit it, but if he is honest with himself, he will see it and fix it.

Orlando fixed some of the defense at half. The offense may take a week or two to improve a lot, but I think he will. He has to because he wants this job.

Read this on another site. Do Tom Herman and the coaching staff now eat watered down cold eggs and burnt toast the next week?
They should after what I saw out there today. That actually might be a little generous.

They need to scrap whatever plan they had at TE because it was ineffective and horribly executed. Gray was a liability as a blocker (shocker) and for some reason was kept on the field when they went empty.

Now that I have come down im with you on this.  Last year we beat ND in the opener and everyone was talking Playoffs.  Look how that turned out.

It wasnt as good as it appeared then and I am now hoping this game isnt as bad it appears either.

Lots of things to fix but its his first and atleast the guys didnt give up like they did vs Iowa State and Kansas
Totally agree with you 100%...

I made that statement because people too easily forget that after that ND game we (Texas) were going to a playoff. Hell I was one of them!

Overreactions were disappointing because you do have to put everything into context.

Yes...

Shane might not be the guy...

*O-line sucks ( I was guilty of that) ..

Defense sucks ...

Malik overrated...

But...

Can we make that determination after one game, especially of a new regime ?

* Charlie was run first, he recruited run first linemen and today Texas threw the ball 53 (Lil J one pass), even I wasn't expecting that. I have never played o-line but from all I gather is that those big nasties like to impose their will and that doesn't happen on pass protection when your going backwards.

It was a weird day all the way around.

I agree.

I love Herman but have one complaint...

If he would have watched the film last year he would have seen that this O-line was built (recruited) to run block FIRST because of Charlie's philosophy. They threw the ball today 53(Lil j) times.

I was one of the first ones to him in here and state that o-line suck ass but after some reflection (some beers) it was evident that there being asked to learn a WHOLE new philosophy. Going forward is not the same as going backwards from what I gather from reads from big nasties. Any former linemen here care to share?

Both of Conner Williams penalties... Pass protection. Even he has to adjust.

I'm hoping Herman and Co realize this fast.

Conner was being doubled. The Maryland coach wasn't a fool. That will probably continue going forward.

Now, y'all know I'm a woman, but it seems that if you balance the offense, even a run oriented offensive line could pass protect better. Oh, and put in an extra running back, one that can block and catch-instead of a tight end. We lost our lone tight end for the year. When GG improves, use him again.

Defense, go the way of the second half and improve it. Solid fundamentals. We have talent. Use it, don't neutralize it.

A year ago I was disappointed in the constant miscommunication in the secondary.  Saturday, the CB's just flat out got beat on a consistent basis the few times Maryland had to throw the ball.  The miscommunication this year was up front with the OL.  My hope is that the group can gel and be more consistent b/c with Buechele, he has to have a running game and clean pocket to be effective.  Hook em.

Saw this on another board, sucks but true

The coaches performed absolutely horribly... Completely disappointed at LITERALLY everything they did. Play calling was atrocious and I believed Tom to be a man that could use the tools he has to construct a winning team. It's early, but man that didn't look to be the case.

11 penalties for 117 yards... Discipline? What discipline? Maybe Tom and I have two very different ideas of "discipline."

Tom rolled out a garbage product... I blame 95% of it on the coaching staff. Their product was sub par... I hope this is the last week that that is the case.

Yea it was very bad.

Kind of floors me when he said didnt start preparing for Maryland until the final week.  Herman, Orlando, and Beck were out-coached.

Ironic to hear Herman to tell the players you cant be complacent just to be at UT because it appears the coaches got complacent just to be hired at UT.

Couldn't agree more... I'm pretty blown away. Herman talked a very big/good game.

I have been holding my tongue for 10 months now just waiting to see some improvement on the field. I was so disappointed by the shit show on Saturday...all I could do is laugh at the comedy capers on ST ,O, D this team is far from what we are being told is good by this coaching staff. Told my buddy this game would tell us everything about who and where Texas is as a program . The game tape shows it all ..another mediocre season.

Lets get this out of the way first......WE DO NOT HAVE MORE TALENT that Maryland....We Have no one anywhere close to their running back. We have no one close to their LB (or was he a D-lineman?) that terrorized us all day.

" know your enemy and know yourself and in a 1000 battles you will never lose"......wise words....we knew neither. Our enemy did not do anything surprising except do exactly what they were advertised to do....and do it damned well in spite of us. The worst performing unit we had on the field yesterday was our coaching staff and it wasnt close.
