Smith on being offered: "Just honored to receive an offer from THE University of Texas. Just a blessing."

Sources told HornSports Smith was offered as a slot receiver.

I don't think he comes then. Kid wants to be a QB I've heard. Of course, his Houston gig is now sort of in question given that a new HC might want something different at the position.

Don't know why you don't just offer him as a QB. Its what he is. Fine arm, incredible legs, stands out – way out – even on a team with Damian Miller on it.

Just my opinion . . .

Question: Can schools offer as many at a position as they like?  For instance, can we take a class of 15 defensive tackles if we wanted?  Or do we have to try and get o many wr, rb, qb, etc.? The reason I mention it is perhaps he was offered as a wr to make the numbers work?  Or maybe a qb Herman wants has been promised that he'll be the only qb offered that cycle.  Idk, just guessing as to why a wr offer would go out to a guy that appears to be a qb

Didn't DKR use to recruit a bunch of linebackers every year.  They were typically one of the better athletes on each team.

It appears our new baseball coach attempts to recruit a lot to pitchers and then make position players out of them.

DKR reportedly recruited kids just so they couldn't play for his opponents.

You could recruit 15 DT's if you wanted.... no "position limitations."

Heck just look at how many TE we have extended offers to within the past week.  I counting three right now!

Yes, they can. However, since there is a limit on the number of scholarships the NCAA permits each school to offer (both each year and in total), coaching staffs usually try to keep a proportionate number at all positions. Whenever that proportion gets out of whack, the team suffers.

You could be right on making the numbers work. However, since we had a QB leave to transfer, another switched to WR, and another graduates – why would there be a logjam at QB? We have on QB commit, and Merrick and Buechele coming back.

I don't think adding another QB would do anything to Ehlinger, if thats what you mean. Ehlinger is very much a team concept player, wants whats best for the team.

I appreciate your thoughts. Whatever the case may end up being, I'd like him to come here. Kid just makes plays that most dream of.

DKR spent most of his career without having NCAA scholly limits. And yes, the above poster is right. DKR used to recruit some kids just so they wouldn't end us elsewhere. Seems like you had never ending depth but DKR also had an NCAA rule that limited who could play "Varsity" ball. Frosh weren't allowed to play back in that day. Not sure sophs were either.

DKR wasn't alone in that strategy as other schools, aggy being one of them, did the same thing. Which is funny because they are the first ones to accuse him of doing so to keep players from them!

Sirhornsalot,

I will be honest and say that I do not think Herman is sold on Buechele as his starting QB and Ehlinger seems to be plagued with injuries and many in Westlake when you talk to them will tell you they just cannot see him staying healthy at the college level.  I think Herman is looking for a QB that has a lot more speed and is a better running threat than Buechele.  You look at his offense at Ohio, and Houston they both centered around a QB that was very athletic who possessed the ability to score with his feet as well as his throwing arm.

To be honest with you I think Herman can adapt his offense to the skill set of his quarterback. If you look at when Ohio State made that title run he went from Braxton Miller who is more of a running quarterback, to JT Barrett Who is a good mix of runner and thrower, to Cardale Jones who did his best work from the pocket but was mobile enough to make plays with his feet. if you're a good offense of coordinator you'll find ways to move the ball and put up points regardless of your personnel.
