Spring Football 2026

Who Cares No Worries GIF by Fugum

Not me brother. I paid for them and I'm wearing them!

Anybody catching a buzz on the Kool-Aid yet?
I was thinking about this.... I've listened to several of the Spring Training Reports from On Texas Football. Man... they are laying the hype on even thicker than normal. I think Texas will be very talented and good this year... but they're saying things like "Texas will score 40+ points a game." And "If they score 40+ points a game they will play for the national championship." And, "every position I look at has NFL talent and depth."

They are also hyping up Muschamp to an unrealistic stature - while diminishing what Coach K did with the defense.

I get it - this is what we Texas fans want to hear. But I'm not falling for it this year. Again, I think Texas will be good. But ramping up the fans like this is the most talented team ever at Texas is not doing the coaching staff any favors. They're lathering us up to the point that if we don't kill just about everyone we play, the only explanation (in our minds) is bad coaching!

This will be new for me. I'm going to try to hold off on predicting we go undefeated.... until right before the season starts. Baby steps.

Here's a few "concerns" that keep me from chugging the burnt-orange Kool Aid that Burton and company are serving up:

Our OL is a question mark. We were average at best here (down-right awful at the beginning of the year). Baker is playing a new position, and we will likely have a transfer guard and right tackle starting. And, depth, regardless of what OnTexas Football is saying - is a big question here.

Our Offense - has not been the reason for our recent success. Quite honestly it has more-so been our defense (particularly in 2024). We have had poor blocking / pass protection and have been gut-rotten in the red-zone. And the remedy for this... fire the DC?? Muschamp is cool and all.... we all like a good chest bump by the coach after a good play, a bloody face from ripping the headset off, and a fist right to the middle of a dry-erase board.... but goodness gracious let's tap the brakes on the over-the-top accolades. If Muschamp can equal what Coach K did in 2024, I'll jump on the bandwagon!

Penalties - if this doesn't get cleaned up, we won't make the playoffs. It's two years and running where we're amongst the worst teams in college football regarding penalties. Last year we were literally second-to-last.

Special Teams - Thank you Niblett and Shipley for making the special team acceptable.

Please don't rip away my fan-card. I'm just offering these things up for discussion.

I agree that we're seeing a lot of hype. But I think in this case, it's warranted. I think we have the most talented roster since 2005. We won a national championship in 2005.

I don't think Burton is lying about any of it or even just making it seem more than it is. They said last year they didn't think Texas would live up to the national media hype and they pointed to the OL as the why. They were accurate in that assessment.

At the onset of this season, Burton explained why Texas had failed to live up to the pre-season hype. So much green on the all important OL. Four new starters who had not started anywhere else. Green. I agree with that.

But I don't see that anymore. We brought in some good OL talent and our young'ens have grown up and come into their own. I haven't felt this good about a Texas OL in some time.

Should be a fun year. We'll all be breathing fire around here if we come out and bitchslap Ohio State.

Go position by position and compare this team with last year's. Where's the Cam Coleman? Compare the Smothers/Brown duo to Trey Wisner and Baxter coming off knee surgery. Compare the OL and the depth. I'd honestly like to see that posted so we could all understand the differences in last year and this year.

The OL was awful because we had 4 starters with no experience. Which meant we had an OL without any experience together, lacking cohesiveness.

That's not happening anymore. We have depth. We have great talent. We have experience. What's not to like?

Jonah Williams just had shoulder surgery and will miss the rest of the baseball season. He will be able to start fall camp ready to go though.

I understand he injured the shoulder diving for a foul ball during the USC series.

From Gerry/OTF

Hearing … Rotator cuff is Jonah’s injury

4-6 months for baseball

Could be up to 7-8 for football

Any doctors have a different thought?

I don't see the depth on the OL... though I haven't done the analysis like you suggested.

Don't get me wrong... I hope Bobby Burton is right. It seems like we lost a lot of "big humans" and certainly didn't replace the numbers. I wonder how deep we are with people who could step in and not be a glaring liability in the OL. Last year we were completely vulnerable at one position.... This wasn't corrected until they moved the center to guard.

I agree... with the exception of OL. Project, for example, our center has to miss a game or two. Or Goosby. If this occurs - I hope you're right about the young'ens... because they will be called on.

Maybe I have PTSD from last years OL.

You've got Sikorski who was a starter. Andre Cojoe was leading the battle for RT (with Baker) until he got injured last year. He'll have a full year and change since that injury. Jordan Coleman who I think would beat out the pending transfer coming in. His brother Devin has also made strides. Jaydon Chatman had starter snaps last year and performed well. And at C/OG, Jackson Christian has become good depth. Heck, I've heard great things about Turtine, but I don't think he'll see much time this year.

Transfer Jonte Newman and freshman Kaden Scherer are the only ones I'd say aren't ready for prime time right now.

Man, the injury bug just seems to strike at us as soon as we get some of the elite of the elite recruits to campus. Long history of such things happening. Frustrating.

He was injured when he got to Austin and remained in rehab for much of his freshman year. Now this.

I think it's come to a time where the young man will have to pick one sport. That should be baseball, IMO. It's taking a toll on his body.
