I know everyone is excited that we are finally heading into a new era, the problem we are about 4 years too late. Everyone needs to slow down this is going to be a total rebuild. We are at least 3 to 5 yrs away from being real good again regardless of who comes in. We do not have elite talent right now and let us not forget we do not have a D1 starting QB on the 40 right now. My early thoughts on next season we are at best a 6-6 football team.

More talent then you are giving credit for.

Really depends on the hire

Really good offensive mind and I think we are about the same 8-4 to 9-3 team.

Defensive or politician type hire and I could see your prediction coming true.

While season hinges on Ash being able to play or a transfer/juco guy coming in to help.

You need to step away from the ledge and put the knife back in the drawer. We're Texas! Just "be cool".

With all due respect that rings pretty hollow right now. Until the administration proves to me that winning is important and not just making money I am taking a wait and see approach.

305 years? total rebuild? I dont really agree with that

I dont expect Texas to win the national title next year but they have no business winning just 6 games either with a good coach

Texas had no business being blown out by BYU this year or Ole Miss. Nor played like crap against OSU

You put a good coaching staff in place of Mack Brown and Co this past season and Texas may have run the table in the big 12...at worst they have a few less losses. Even with the mess this year Texas was a win away from winning the conf and going to a BCS Bowl. how crazy would that have been?

You put good coaching in Austin and UT should be pretty decent next year. Not national title ready, but not 5-7, 6-6 in the Big 12 either IMO

I do know that we will struggle next year. Hell Saban went 7-6 and lost to ULM his first season. Stoops went .500 his first year at OU.

I don't know that it's going to take 3-5 years with the right guy, but I'm going to wait and see who the guy is first before trying to predict the future. As has been talked about already, the biggest question moving forward is the QB position, but that can be remedied very quickly with the right transfer.

Let's look position by position:

QB - Total crap shoot to say the least. Need some kind of transfer here without a doubt. It can be a JUCO or a graduate, but something needs to be done.

RB - Very strong. Gray and Brown are a solid 1-2 punch and Johnson as a scat back are a solid group to build around

WR - Lose Davis, but return Shipley, Johnson and Sanders. Definitely an above average group

TE - LOL

OL - Lose best two in Hopkins and Hawkins. Need young guys like Perkins, Kennedy, Riser and Flowers to take the next step and Harrison to turn it up. Actually think this group has done well this season and think they could be in for the biggest improvement with a better S&C Program. Question mark, but solid talent to build around

DE - Lose Jeffcoat and I think Reed turns pro. Liked what I saw from Davis and Blueitt in spurts, but can they do it full time? Gonna need other guys to step up. If Reed returns I will feel a LOT better about this group

DT - Malcom Brown and Desmond Jackson return, but the depth is slim to none. Very worried here, especially if one of those top two get hurt.

LB - Jinkens, Santos and Edmond return. Robinson really coached these guys up. Thompson and Cole provide depth. Average group when they are playing their best. Need strong coaching

DB - Lose Phillips and Byndom. Return a lot of guys who have played. Talent will be there, but some of it is unproven. Will be interesting to see what happens without Akina.

K/P - Going to miss Fera. He was great this year. No idea who replaces him at either spot. I guess Jordan will kick and Russ will punt, but who knows.

I don't think this team is THAT far away. I do believe that whoever the new coach is going to come in and have to clear out some spots and bring in more talent than Mack has over the last couple of years, but if we can find a QB and have a DC who can work miracles like Robinson did we could make it happen.

I guess another question is what kind of impact will the new coach and his staff have on the players that returning next year?

I think Texas has similar talent as a team next year to 1998. Obviously individual positions are different.

MB took from 1998 to a roughing the kicker penalty on December 1, 2001. Take that penalty away and we "Play" against Miami. 4 years to play for the title is reasonable.

How bleak was our QB position in August 2006? We had a redshirt freshman 3 star.

hmmm.MB, I have heard the opposite. Care to elaborate.
Just my evaluation of the situation. I believe when Ash really thinks about the risk will way out weigh the reward of playing again.
