Slow down

it really all hinges on the QB situation..look what happen with aggie and sumlin...the right fit could hide other defects on this squad..i still think we win 7 games next year at least but the right fit at coach can make all the differnce..theres talent it just needs to be coached up and we have to figure out the qb..heck mayb once the hire is announced we mite just get a new commitment but dont shut the door on swoops or herd..

If there ever was a time for optimism, I believe it is right now. That administration that has held Texas back for years, is no longer running the show.

I've never bought into the "we just don't have enough talent" theme. The problem is that we just haven't had enough coaching. Bill Snyder and K-State are the poster child for doing more with less. And man for man you will never convince me that Okie State, Baylor, or even OU have better talent than Texas.

Could we use another 5-star or three? Of course. But the cupboard is not bear.

I think the bigger problem for Texas will be whether the existing talent fits the scheme of the new coach. There's a good chance that pieces will but not all. So whether it's Harbaugh or Saban or Meyer or whoever coming in, I expect it to be a couple of years (if we are lucky) before we are truly elite again.

Right coach may win next year with the right QB..

Right coach WILL win by year 2 & 3, regardless.

An aging Mack Brown, with the most limited skill-set at QB in the history of UT, and no defensive coordinator until a quarter of the season was complete, won 8 games in 2013. That is about as dire as it gets. It is all improvement from here on out with the right hire.

With the wrong hire, considering the SEC's presence, is disastrous. And that's why it will be a good hire.

I agree with all that. However lots "ifs"

I think we have potential on the roster to win now. Now I do agree if some underclassmen leave that would be a huge hit. I hope Reed stays, if he does he'd be the man up front next year and give Davis an opportunity to excel on the other side. We just need someone to develop the talent on the roster, instill an attitude, and build a 'team' mentality. I had a coach that preached the reload mentality rather than the rebuild mentality. At Texas, with the talent we have and will continue to bring in, I think that we should be in the hunt immediately.

I think we have some talent but it is way to early to know how things will work out at qb. No one knows about Ash

JUCO is a posssibility

Swoops may turn out to be a player

There is enough talent that if we get them coached up at least we can be more competitive next yr than this yr. hell, I bet there are kids on campus that could walk on and do better than case has.

lets get our coach first and give him a chance to evaluate and put our team together with a proper plan and with good coaching. Saban was 6-6 his first yr at Bama, then it was off to the races.

I do know that we will struggle next year. Hell Saban went 7-6 and lost to ULM his first season. Stoops went .500 his first year at OU.
I don't know that it's going to take 3-5 years with the right guy, but I'm going to wait and see who the guy is first before trying to predict the future. As has been talked about already, the biggest question moving forward is the QB position, but that can be remedied very quickly with the right transfer.

Let's look position by position:

QB - Total crap shoot to say the least. Need some kind of transfer here without a doubt. It can be a JUCO or a graduate, but something needs to be done.

RB - Very strong. Gray and Brown are a solid 1-2 punch and Johnson as a scat back are a solid group to build around

WR - Lose Davis, but return Shipley, Johnson and Sanders. Definitely an above average group

TE - LOL

OL - Lose best two in Hopkins and Hawkins. Need young guys like Perkins, Kennedy, Riser and Flowers to take the next step and Harrison to turn it up. Actually think this group has done well this season and think they could be in for the biggest improvement with a better S&C Program. Question mark, but solid talent to build around

DE - Lose Jeffcoat and I think Reed turns pro. Liked what I saw from Davis and Blueitt in spurts, but can they do it full time? Gonna need other guys to step up. If Reed returns I will feel a LOT better about this group

DT - Malcom Brown and Desmond Jackson return, but the depth is slim to none. Very worried here, especially if one of those top two get hurt.

LB - Jinkens, Santos and Edmond return. Robinson really coached these guys up. Thompson and Cole provide depth. Average group when they are playing their best. Need strong coaching

DB - Lose Phillips and Byndom. Return a lot of guys who have played. Talent will be there, but some of it is unproven. Will be interesting to see what happens without Akina.

K/P - Going to miss Fera. He was great this year. No idea who replaces him at either spot. I guess Jordan will kick and Russ will punt, but who knows.

I don't think this team is THAT far away. I do believe that whoever the new coach is going to come in and have to clear out some spots and bring in more talent than Mack has over the last couple of years, but if we can find a QB and have a DC who can work miracles like Robinson did we could make it happen.
You left out Ridgeway in the DT rotation, I think he could be special.

I know everyone is excited that we are finally heading into a new era, the problem we are about 4 years too late. Everyone needs to slow down this is going to be a total rebuild. We are at least 3 to 5 yrs away from being real good again regardless of who comes in. We do not have elite talent right now and let us not forget we do not have a D1 starting QB on the 40 right now. My early thoughts on next season we are at best a 6-6 football team.
Disagree.. I believe we do have some elite Tallent. . Except in the qb position and with the right coaching staff we are a 8-9 win team

So we will not be in the MNC next year?.........But I believe that we will be very good football team. We just need to work hard at getting the Team to know they are good and let or make them work hard this off season.
