Young is one of five players to receive a perfect grade from the composite. Back when Mack Brown was the king of recruiting in the state of Texas, there was never really a doubt where the state’s and nation’s best recruit in 2002 would attend. Young, blessed with size and athleticism that can best be described as “silky smooth,” was the talk of Houston as a high school senior, leading inner-city Madison to the 5A state semifinals. At Texas, Young captured the Longhorns’ first national championship in 35 years with a performance for the ages against Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and the USC Trojans. His NFL career never panned out, but he’ll always be remembered as one of the most electrifying college players

He's still the best college football player I've ever seen play live. That includes Ricky Williams, Bo Jackson, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and others. Dude simply knew how to win.

This would be fantastic. I am concerned about the wide receiver position. The four top WR going into the season are Jordan Whittington, Jake Smith, Joshua Moore, and Troy Omeire. Whittington is looking good, however he has had injury problems along with Jake Smith.
Troy Omeire still has a boot on after a year, so I  hope he's a 100%. I've heard great things about him. Moore was inconsistent last year.

Getting the number eight wide receiver in the country would be a welcomed surprise. He looks like a stud.

TFB reporting WR Kennedy Lewis is likely headed for the portal, and this more Texas' decision than his.

Thorton is slated to play the jack not LB.

College football position battles to watch going forward as spring practices conclude ahead of 2021 season

Texas: Linebacker

Names to knowRay Thornton, Jaylan Ford, David Gbenda

The biggest name to know is DeMarvion Overshown, but he has been out all of spring after undergoing shoulder surgery prior to spring practice. The reason why the linebackers are so important to Texas, especially for this spring, is the task of replacing both All-American Joseph Ossai (off to the NFL Draft) and Juwan Mitchell (in the transfer portal with few signs indicating a possible return to the team).

Overshown is going to be one of the key players in Texas' new-look defense led by co-coordinators Pete Kwiatowski and Jeff Choate, but here in the spring, keep your eye on LSU transfer Ray Thornton as well as Ford and Gbenda, a pair of in-state rotation players who saw plenty of action in 2020 but now have the opportunity to emerge as potential starters.

Had the pleasure to coach against Coach Shipley. Good dude and I wish him the best in retirement. I’m sure he will be his energies into his new adventure.

Something to keep in mind for the QB battle.

247 saying Casey Thompson is scheduled to graduate in May, so we probably shouldn't expect him to stick around if he's not QB1 in the fall.

IT had a source watch the scrimmage today:

- the OL was (L to R) Jones-Angilau-Majors-Okafor-Karic

- WR Troy Omeire participated, but was in a green jersey for no contact

- WR play wasn't great, and Jordan Whittington is the only consistent threat so far

- Hudson Card performed much better than Casey Thompson, and reps were split evenly (a separate source said Card was slightly better, but neither were great)

- the scrimmage was 2.5 hours straight

- all TEs played a bunch

- LB Luke Brockermeyer had three INTs on the week

- LB David Gbenda and CB Kitan Crawford stood out, and the source said Crawford is "ready to start"

- Jerrin Thompson and Brenden Schooler appear to be in a battle to start at safety

Hearing about the offensive struggles (i.e. QB, WR), hopefully it means the 1st team defense is stout!
