Longhorn News/Discussion (Non-Recruiting)

TFB had a source tell them that QB Casey Thompson looked "the best, by far" in Saturday's scrimmage.

I thought that was a note worth passing on since nothing has suggested so far that either QB was separating.

The 10 highest-rated quarterback recruits since 2000

Young is one of five players to receive a perfect grade from the composite. Back when Mack Brown was the king of recruiting in the state of Texas, there was never really a doubt where the state’s and nation’s best recruit in 2002 would attend. Young, blessed with size and athleticism that can best be described as “silky smooth,” was the talk of Houston as a high school senior, leading inner-city Madison to the 5A state semifinals. At Texas, Young captured the Longhorns’ first national championship in 35 years with a performance for the ages against Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and the USC Trojans. His NFL career never panned out, but he’ll always be remembered as one of the most electrifying college players

A few spring practice notes from IT...

- Christian Jones and Andrej Karic are holding down the LT and RT spots, respectively.

- QBs are still splitting reps, and nobody is standing out.

- no deep threat has emerged at WR which is somewhat hurting both QBs right now.

- with DeMarvion Overshown out due to injury, David Gbenda has been the best LB.

- they feel stronger that TE Malcolm Epps will transfer after graduating in May.

- true freshman LB Terrence Cooks has been as advertised when it comes to his athleticism.

Apparently UT edited out the part where Okafor said Thompson was running first string QB.

That is good news about Jones and Karic. I figured it would be those 2, I just had it flipped.  Sounds like Okafor is doing a great job so far at G and Majors has already solidified himself as C1.  I'm guessing Angilau is still at LG.  Still waiting on Tyler Johnson to put it together and you gotta wonder where Kerstetter fits in to this once he returns.

That is a little concerning about the WR deep threat.  Hopefully the WR group will be gtg when Smith gets back in the fall and they have a solid 4 or 5 group with him, Moore, Omiere, Whittington and Washington.  Sprinkle in a little Alexis, Woodard and Dixon to have real depth to create mismatches.

Sucks about Epps, but I've been reading/hearing great things about Whiley, Helm and even Brewer.  With Liebrock also doing some good things and Sanders coming in, the TE room is stacked.  Something has to give.  Epps isn't fast enough at WR and is just a passable blocker...might be odd man out.

I would imagine Kerstetter would be your go-to guy as a backup at C, G, and T. Of course, that probably doesn't help his draft grade so look for a fight at a couple of those positions. Who can he beat? Majors looks locked in at center. Kerstetter was never more than serviceable at center.

I would think Christian Jones will have to fight him off. I think Karic is there to stay.

At WR, look at the portal thing. I think we pick someone up who will help.

Epps is everything you described, but he has an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time. lol Fumbles, onside kicks, etc.
