Longhorn News/Discussion (Non-Recruiting)

I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that Mitchell looks to be in better shape. This would be a big development. Norton is the only other true "nose type." Maybe Bryant - but he may be a year away.

Edit - not sure about January??

Mitchell may get there at some point. Bryant, says his co-players, is as good as Sweat was. So I don't think he needs to wait another year.

January is jsut too good to redshirt. We will have depth and quality on the DL.

Is January more of a nose or tackle?

I know we shift lines a lot - so this doesn't always really matter. I understand when we line up in our "base defense" it benefits to have more of a true nose / run stuffer and then a tackle.

He can play both, but will see most of his time at nose. Collins will play nose alot and also Bryant, Bill Norton and Jermayne Lole.

DTs – Broughton, Bledsoe, Savea. Lole can play DT as well.

Watching the OTF and they think Texas now can cross train because of three secondary coaches able to be on the field with the new rules.
One thing I have noticed is don't put any stock into who the coaching staff puts out there as the first string. It varies from day to day.

For people like me who played in the 80s or before:

0 technique = Nose (guard).
Edge = Defensive end.
Set the edge = Containment.
RPO = Run Pass Option. This used to be the QBs decision on a roll-out. Now, I believe it is decided before the play based on alignment.
Twitchy = Quick
Physicality = Hits hard
Hitting a defenseless player = Don't be confused; this is now a penalty. Formerly what we were taught to do to "separate the player from the ball."
Replay - Don't be confused; this former renovation for the TV viewer, is now a renovation for the Referee.... and an annoyance to the viewer.

And for you whippersnappers:

Huddle = Group of players circling up to hear the play (or defense).

Public Service Credit -- check.

For the whippersnappers.
Techniques on the DL were numbered 0 thru 9 both directions. In the dark ages gaps weren't A, B, C etc. they were numbered (even to the right and odd to left) as were the backs. There wasn't an X Y or Z position. It was WR, WB (wing back) and TE.
A personal foul these days was a hard hit back then. And when blocking you had to use chicken wings. You could not hold your opponent at bay with your hands and arms outstretched.
