I remember multiple games where he, the deepest safety, let guys catch the ball behind him or failed to cover them
Not exactly the specifics I was asking for, but I'm ready to move on.

One of the stupidest plays a coach could run. Thanks coach.
I don't follow his logic either. He's one of the best red-zone teams in the country, we're one of the worst - and college overtime is a contest of red-zone skills. Our QB was struggling mightily at that point, his had just engineered a traumatic come back. But at the same time, I have an odd respect for the decision to go for it. Maybe I'm still suffering from Tom Herman PTSD - from an OU game where he opted to go into another overtime.... an equally ridiculous decision. I guess if you're going to make a stupid decision - do it going for the win.

Hello my brothers, I'm back from the deer lease. No, didn't see much but hey, there were 35 guys invading 2500 acres, most of them city boys who don't really know how to hunt. Speeding up and down the lease's dirt roads, raising hell at night, you know how it goes. Through the weekend I heard about 7-8 shots in the distance (but still on the lease). So I thought to myself, "hey, somebody is seeing something. So there's promise in that. lol.
So I stop by the main camp to the group of guys (I know none of them) and asked who had gotten a deer yet. Guy steps forward saying "we didn't see anything at all. Nothing." acting disappointed.
So I said "well, which one of you is shooting up the woods? I was sure somebody was getting a deer out of that."
"Gee, I don't know."
Good enough, I drove back into the lease at that point. What had happened is they've got a couple of guys who are lousy shots, had the opportunity, and missed. So I understand not wanting to admit that. lol
Anyway, my son Austin and I take a break at noon, drive down to this country store where they served food, and they had a TV with the Texas game on. Of course, I sat down to watch immediately. I picked it up right after the half. Several minutes later, my son is done and he's wanting to get back into the stand. We're up 27-7 so I told him "hey they won't come back from that margin, I think it's safe to go. So we left.
In the stand, I couldn't stand it so I opened up the phone's ESPN app and I watched the play-by-play text. By that time, it was tied at 30. I couldn't believe it. I was pissed. So glad we pulled it out but damn, why can't we put a team away and put the foot on the throat?
So glad we won but damn, that can't happen anymore.
Feels damn good to be 8-1 just the same. Hook'em
It seems to be the case with UT for some time now. Certainly all four of the Sam Ehlinger years. I wonder if all the rule changes in football have made this the norm now.... "no lead is safe?" In other words, is it just Texas or is it more the "state of the game?"

Here's a random thought.... This Texas team is good... really good. The best we've seen since the Mack Brown glory years. We seem to have two
Achilles' heels if you will: 1. Red Zone offense. 2. Two minute defense.

The former, I don't have a clue. I guess the only suggestion my arm-chair expertise can offer is - start kicking field goals. We do have a very good / reliable kicker....

the later... I think might be a rather easy fix. Well.... I say that with all humility.... as a fan. It appears to me that our DBs simply give WAY too much cushion in these situations. We absolutely hand the opponent anything underneath.... up to about 12-15 yards it seems. And we also allow the QB what looks like a mile of green pastures to frolic through toward our red-zone if he can simply find his way through our "three" rushers. And this because we drop so deep.

I was watching Okie Light against ou... in a very similar situation that we found ourselves in vs our arch rival. Gabriel had the ball with under two minutes to play. They needed tree points to tie and a TD to go ahead. We've been in this situation twice in the past few games, and we give up the yardage for field goal range in record time & with relative ease - and only contest the touchdown it seems - when the opponent gets into the red zone. I saw the strangest thing that Okie Light did in a similar scenario.... they covered the receivers on short routs. I believe (if memory serves) that they forced a three and out - then took the victory formation with their offense. It was about as beautiful as anything in Stillwater could possibly be.

I'm open to correction here. Don't get me wrong... I'm a coach K fan. He has improved the defense drastically in 2.5 years. But my armchair suggestion is that he is WAY too conservative with coverage when the "two minute" type situation arises. Am I nuts (be gentle)?

The challenge is, we don't know what the coverages called are and what rules each player is supposed to follow. Good football minds like Rod Babers can figure stuff out at times from watching the film but even then it is a bit of a guess.

The deep post TD yesterday was probably due to the safety coming up on the TE and leaving the CB (Brooks) expecting deep help that wasn't there. So, did Brooks get beat or was it the safeties fault.

Ultimately, too many breakdowns or miscommunications deep by our secondary that allow easy deep ball completions. Something that needs to improve going forward.
It’s not much of a challenge knowing the deepest safety on the field is to not let anybody over the top.

It’s a combination of all.

Agree on everything. Our cushion is too soft in 2 minute defense. Tighter coverage would also benefit your pass rush too.

I watched the bedlam game as well. I believe the first play on that last OU drive was the same setup and route combo as their first against Texas in the game winning drive. Ok State defense tightened up and got it did

I don't have the football knowledge to get into the nuts and bolts of this issue, but on a general level, I assume we're playing with more of a cushion due to the injuries in the secondary and trying to protect the more inexperienced DBs from big plays.

That said, I agree with you and am very frustrated with the cushions we're giving WRs. Multiple teams are taking what the defense gives them and it's almost cost us 2 of the past 3 games.
