Longhorn News/Discussion (Non-Recruiting)

Speaking of ex-Longhorn QBs, I was able to catch up with Shannon Kelley a couple nights back.

He's divorced from Mary Lou Rhetton now and has remarried and is doing very well.

I don't recall Presley but Lowry and Akins were greats. I vaguely remember McBath. Can't remember Constanzo at all.

I knew Major was at the bottom of the chart and rose up quickly. He was so small and meager that I thought we were screwed when he came in. But he had some moxie about him and it served him well.
McBath had a rollercoaster ride at UT. He arrived at Texas in 1976 and shared 4th string with Jon Aune behind McEachern, Ted Constanzo and Mike Cordaro. McEachern got hurt in the fall practices. Constanzo and Cordaro didnt play very well so McBath was promoted to starter as a true freshman for four games; beat Arkie but lost to #11 aTm. McBath was the starting QB going into 1977 with a loaded team with backup Jon Aune. Won three games, team rose to #4 but he broke his ankle on the 7th play of the Okiehoma game and out the rest of the season. McBath was still hampered with ankle for 1978 so McEachern & Donnie Little took the starter and backup roles. For reasons I cant remember McBath started the last regular season game against aggy and won. He also then won the Sunbowl against Maryland. Even though he had a year of eligibility left, he quit football knowing he wasnt going to make it to the NFL. He wanted to concentrate on becoming a doctor.

Mack Brown inherited a TON of talent in 1998. IIRC, there were 6 QBs on the roster with 4 legit starters. With what Mack inherited, he rarely had more than 3 QBs. Mack's reason (excuse) for not picking up a QB in 2008 was that the didnt like having 4 QBs on the roster. The two QBs behind Colt were terrible and the 2008 class had two star QBs that had interest in Texas: RG3 and 5* Luck. Luck came to summer camp not one but two Feb/Mar junior camps. smh

#1 Greg Cicero was the star headliner recruit from Cali. He messed up his leg (knee?) and was out for the season. He need long rehab and transferred to Baylor.

#2 Adam Dunn was a huge QB prospect (6'5 245) from , however, his passion was baseball. He missed the spring workouts and summer playing baseball, which put him behind going into the fall practices. He wasnt prepared and, supposedly didnt know the playbook. In 1999, he was moved to TE but he really didnt like it. I cant remember what year but eventually quit football to concentrate on baseball - good call. He ended up having a good MLB career and played in the World Series.

#3 Richard Walton was the carryover starter from 1997 team. He ended up breaking his hand or wrist... and that vaulted Applewhite to the starting role as a true freshman.

#4 Applewhite looked so young and thin, he was looked like Opie on andy griffith show and the nickname stuck with the fan base for a long time.

I remember a story a long time ago by a guy who was with Applewhite's father (Larry?) in the stands at a Texas game. As the story went, Larry had a big button on his shirt that said something to the effect, "Father of #11." Well.... this old drunk guy pointed at Larry and said, "I've always wanted to meet Derrick Johnson's father!" hahaha If you dont know, Derrick Johnson was a Texas black defensive player that also wore #11. The guy said they both laughed about that the rest of the game.

Didn't get to see it. No TV then. Not even radio. 😥
haha those were the days. No joke my kids and grand kids look at me strange but my brothers will attest that I made my own AM radio with mostly homemade parts tacked on a piece of plywood size solid wood. I could make most parts myself but needed to salvage a crystal from a broken radio. I ran a wire along the ridge of the roof and down into my small bedroom. It required no power and I could listen to wolfman jack, larry king, jim Bohannon, etc., through a little white earpiece while everyone was sleeping.

yep. Landry was the UT QB until Bobby stepped on campus (1941?) and was then moved to full back. In the NFL, due to his game intelligence and previous QB experience, Landry had to QB a game.
Bobby had a pretty fast RB in the back field with him from Malta Texas!

which HB as that? I didnt see anyone on the '47 team from malta. I had to web search Malta, TX to find out where it's at haha

The Longhorn leading halfbacks in '47 were...
Jim Canady Austin
Byron Gillory Marshall
Billy Pyle Wichita Falls
Randall Clay Pampa

I hadn't seen anyone post about it, but there is a daily show on YouTube that features a bunch of guys that were radio hosts at The Horn before they unceremoniously canned them. Bucky, BK, Trey, Harge, Zay, Jeff Howe, Wags. It starts a live stream at 8 AM and continues til 5 PM.
They are worth a listen. The channel is Texas Sports Unfiltered. A word of caution, if offensive language bothers you or you have young ones listening you may want to forego this channel.

I have a question. I was looking at the Big 12 standings and wondered if Texas actually controls it's own destiny. If Texas wins out along with Okie Lite then there will be a three way tie with ousux, Texas and Okie lite at 8-1. Who goes to the CCG?

In the Pick‘em thread you have Kansas beating ousux, which is a good possibility and okie lite beating ousux, allowing them to go 8-1. If that happens then we would control our own destiny. There is a lot of football left, but I could live with those ifs & buts.

Randall Clay PampaAllen Lawler born in Malta not sure what class he was in when fambily moved to Texarkans Ark. Where he graduated from Ark. High. He , Jesse Owens and Mel Patton had several memorial races 100 yds.

Alsohe played pro ball with Layne. As to Maltajust a wide spotin the road. At one time eight grocery stores two banks and two cotton gins. This before my time school now 1-8 grades.

Forgot he was there 1941- maybe 1946 not sure. Played in 1945 Sugar Bowl might be better known as sptinter than football.

ah, ok. Lawler was Jr in 1947 (Layne's Sr season) so maybe '45-48. It gets kind of confusing during the war years; some players started before the war and continued sometime afterwards when they got back and some players died during the war.

He's listed as a right halfback (RH), Allen Lawler, from Texarkana.
He was pretty low on the production ladder that year with only 22 yds but had a good 4.4 av/play. this is without any context. He could have been injured or something

Pretty cool trivia racing Jesse Owens... so he had to be fast.

I feel like I need to ask some of y'all about the Princeton/Rutgers game from 1869.

Was it pretty good?

My memory is not quite like it was back then, but I do remember that the game actually resembled soccer more than football because you weren't allowed to carry or throw the ball which was actually a soccer ball. Rutgers won the game 6-4.

The first game in United States in which the ball was picked up and carried and players were tackled did not come for another six years. That game was played on June 4, 1875 between Tufts University and Harvard.
