SignUp Now!I think QB controversies are a tradition at Texas. Fans will take sides and bash the other QB. It's been that way my whole life as a fan every three to four years. Interesting.... heated at the time but a lot of names most people have forgotten. For instance, a lot of people have forgotten or dont know Applewhite was 4th on the depth chart starting 1998. Ahead of him is what would today would be a 5*, a high 4*, and the previous year's starter. It was fun to watch. Remember Lowry, Akins and the golden boy Mike Presley (1972-73)? Then Akins & Constanzo. Then Codaro & McBath... the same in the 1960s... on and on and on. Competition is good as long as FANS can keep it in perspective.Im going to call my shot now : THIS is the start of the Maalik vs Arch QB controversy that we will be talking about next season
there used to be an old saying at Texas that the most popular guy on campus was the second string QB......remember James Street from Longview replaced Super Bill Bradley in Game 3 of the '68 season and never lost another game all the way thru '69 and a National ChampionshipI think QB controversies are a tradition at Texas. Similar teams but this one is at least at home so I think it should be easier IMO. But I do see your point...lSome one said the same for Houston.![]()
oh, yeah... that was an incredible time. With all the accolades he was given as what today would have been a 5*, cant miss, future NFL QB, he could have been a cancer but instead became a NFL HOF safety. In 1960. Jr Mike Cotton and soph Johnny Genung were competing; there wasnt much grumbling except for the adage, two QBs equals no QBs. Cotton took the reigns in 1961 and led the team to the cotton bowl & 10-1 record. In 1962 Duke Carlisle plays some at QB with Genung, and of course, 1963 Carlisle leads the team in a NC season.there used to be an old saying at Texas that the most popular guy on campus was the second string QB......remember James Street from Longview replaced Super Bill Bradley in Game 3 of the '68 season and never lost another game all the way thru '69 and a National Championship

who were the two QBs at Texas that played QB in the NFL and are in the NFL HOF? One is obvious, the other not so much
oops... forgot about Tommy Wade. he was in the mix in 1963 as a backup.
yep. Landry was the UT QB until Bobby stepped on campus (1941?) and was then moved to full back. In the NFL, due to his game intelligence and previous QB experience, Landry had to QB a game.Tom Landry from Mission Texas and Bobby Layne from Highland Park HS in Dallas

Speaking of ex-Longhorn QBs, I was able to catch up with Shannon Kelley a couple nights back.I think QB controversies are a tradition at Texas. Fans will take sides and bash the other QB. I stood next to MA when I was the F&B Director at the Omni South off IH35.290 and the Horns stayed with us the night before the game, I stand an even 6 foot tall and there is no way MA was taller than meSpeaking of ex-Longhorn QBs, I was able to catch up with Shannon Kelley a couple nights back.
He's divorced from Mary Lou Rhetton now and has remarried and is doing very well.
I don't recall Presley but Lowry and Akins were greats. I vaguely remember McBath. Can't remember Constanzo at all.
I knew Major was at the bottom of the chart and rose up quickly. He was so small and meager that I thought we were screwed when he came in. But he had some moxie about him and it served him well.
lol, he was listed as 6'1 back thenI stood next to MA when I was the F&B Director at the Omni South off IH35.290 and the Horns stayed with us the night before the game, I stand an even 6 foot tall and there is no way MA was taller than me
Didn't get to see it. No TV then. Not even radio.I feel like I need to ask some of y'all about the Princeton/Rutgers game from 1869.
Was it pretty good?
