I noticed his introduction in the Who Are You? thread and thought it deserved recognition on it's own. Y'all welcome a former player. Here is what he wrote.

Born and raised in Austin, saw my first Longhorn game at 5 days old on the way home from being born at the old St. David's Hospital (hadn't even been home yet and got to see us destroy the Piggies, 44-7). Fulfilled my childhood dream of playing football and lettering under Coach Royal in the early '70s after spending many of my formative years as a ballboy (and batboy for baseball) and helping in the equipment room. Earning a scholarship to go to school and play football for Texas was an unbelievable honor and a period of my life I'll always cherish.

Over the 40 years since those treasured times wearing the Longhorn uniform, I made a few attempts at the NFL (I was in more training camps than Gatorade) and played a little minor-league ball. Enjoyed many years as a high school and college football official and spent several years as a coach at the junior high and high school levels, college, and a couple of professional leagues.

Many of the screen names I'm seeing here are very familiar from my days on other sites under a different name. Since my wife and I try to spend as much time as possible in Key West, I decided to change my on-screen handle to something that reflected my desire to eventually become a full time denizen of "The Conch Republic". During our visits there, we've encountered Coach Leach on many occasions and had some great discussions regarding just about everything...except football !

Looking forward to becoming a part of this board; Hook 'Em!

Maybe we can get Conch Horn to share a few stories of his playing days with us!
What do say Conch?
That would be great. I never had affiliation with colleges growing up and became a fan of UT in part because of DKR. I was the first person in my family to attend college and was able to graduate from UT, so any stories about the Royal teams would be great.

I can not wait....I have a Insurance guy that played with Street and the stories I have been told!!!!!

Welcome Conch Horn....have always enjoyed your posts in the past. Coach Royal was as friendly and warm a man as you could ever meet in a social setting...but as a coach he ran a pretty tough program that was much closer to Nick Saban style than Mack Brown style. I'd love to hear some stories about what it was like for you as a player. My understanding is he wasn't really friendly with any players until they graduated then he would be as great of a friend as you could ever have. However, while you were a player in his program it was all business.

Welcome Conch, you and I were at UT about the same time frame, I was there 68-72, we may have crossed paths.

Thanks, Doc. I was bumping around down there since about '61 as a ballboy and helping "Mr. Jim" Blaylock in the equipment room until I finally got my chance to play, so our paths very well could have crossed at some point. Shoot, I spent more time on campus bouncing between Moore-Hill Hall, the stadium, and the Varsity Cafeteria than I did at my home during your stint there. Bill Bradley is like a big brother to me and I spent many a night in his dorm room masquerading as him when bed check time came around and Bill was out on the town. I'd have the covers pulled way up and be facing away from the door when Coach Ellis or Coach Manley would come by and check rooms. They'd crack open the door and say, "Bill, you in?" and I'd grunt an "Umm hmm" in my lowest guttural register...and it worked every time. Guess I was a decent "live dummy"... ;)

Sure this will be an awesome read......thanks for taking the time to do this
