REWARDING FAILURE?

Those who love 4 teams making the playoffs now days in high school football, in the era everyone wins a trophy. Check this out.

10-4A DII district is a prime example of 4 teams making playoffs to be totally absurd.

Houston Scarborough will be on a 57 game losing streak entering the playoffs and will be the first team in Texas High School history to go 0-11 in a season. They will also be the first team to ever make the playoffs without a win.

If UIL is dead set on 4 teams qualifying, then make every district at least 7 team districts. No more 4,5,6 team districts.

TRADITIONAL POWER FALLS

Daingerfield, which won state titles in Class AA in 2008, 2009, and 2010, is now 0-7 on the season. What gives? Daingerfield's pre-district schedule included Class AAA state ranked Atlanta, Gladewater and Gilmer. But this is not a temporary setback for the program. Daingerfield is a school district with more than 50% of it's residents being non-child households. Add to that the largest taxpayer being a coal-powered electric plant nearby (Welsh) which has been under attack by the Obama administration, residents are leaving the town at a consistent rate. On Thursday night, the Daingerfield 7th grade team suited up 13 players. In 1982, it was a class AAAA school (now 5A). Daingerfield has titles from 1969, 83, 85, 2008, 2008 and 2010.

After his team's loss in its showdown with Camas, Union coach Gary McGarvie was telling his team to turn the page and move on.

Camas coach Jon Eagle was probably telling his team the same thing.

So we'll take advice from McGarvie and Eagle and start looking ahead.

The first thing you should know is nothing is settled in the 4A Greater St. Helens League in football. At least, not yet.

Even with their big win on Friday, the Papermakers have not clinched a playoff berth. There is one scenario, however unlikely, in which Camas finishes in a three-way tie for second.

But at the same time, if everything goes according to form, Camas, Union and Skyview could clinch playoff berths with wins this Friday.

If that happens, Camas would secure the No. 1 berth to the state preliminary round, and Union and Skyview would meet Oct. 31 to decide the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds.

And being the No. 2 seed from the 4A may not be such a bad thing. Here's why.

The No. 1 seed from the 4A GSHL won't have to leave Clark County until reaching the state semifinals at the Tacoma Dome. The No. 1 seed would host a Week 10 state preliminary game, as well as first-round and quarterfinal games at state.

However, the opponent in that quarterfinal matchup could be top-ranked Bothell, if everything goes according to form. So circle Nov. 22 on your calendar for a potential matchup between No. 1 Bothell and No. 2 Camas at Doc Harris Stadium in a state quarterfinal.

The No. 2 seed in the 4A GSHL will host a Week 10 state preliminary game. But after that, that team will be on the road in the first round and quarterfinals at state. But the highest ranked team the No. 2 team from the GSHL may face is No. 5 Lake Stevens.

The No. 3 seed from the 4A GSHL will play on the road in Week 10. The winner of that game could open state on the road, potentially against defending state champion Chiawana of Pasco.

Couple of notes:

Camas (7-0) (4-0 Home) hosts Mountain View (2-5) (0-4 Away) on Friday night.  Mountain View made the jump from 3A to 4A this season, and are struggling thus far.  All signs point to this game being a lopsided affair. 

Camas jumped one spot in the MaxPreps national rankings, from 64 to 63, after a 37-20 victory over previously undefeated Union. 

They also are ranked #25 in the MaxPreps West Region Computer Rankings and #3 in the state of Washington.

Bothell, mentioned above, jumped 17 spots from 42 to 25, after a 56-0 victory over Skyline last week.  Skyline is 4-3. 

I'd love for someone to help me understand the way these rankings work.  A team shelacks a 4-2 team and jumps 17 spots nationally, while another team wins by 17 over the prevoiusly undefeated #4 team in the state and they only jump one spot.  Any insight?  Seems odd.  Both teams won on the road.

Cedar Hill vs DeSoto Thursday night - if you like track meets. So much speed in one location. They should have speed guns and stop watches at this thing.

Trinity vs Coppell should also be a helluva game. Trinity lost a close one to SLC last week and should be out for redemption this week. Coppell is tough as nails though.

Four teams though is way too much.

Starting next season 2A will have four go (currently just three go).

I am curious to see how the 6A home-field advantage pilot works. I really like that idea.
