Friday Night Lights – State Championship Week

CLASS 5A DIV 1 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Manvel 49

Highland Park 53

FINAL

Whoever talked up John Stephen Jones earlier . . you were right. He's legit. HP doesn't win this game without him.
Like I said, he just has the "It" factor.  The kid is a winner and is fun to watch.

SHA, I'll echo what others are saying. Good job and much appreciated.

Now about that slack you want during deer season....I'll get with the powers that (wanna) be and we'll get back to you and let you know our decision  B)

Xavier Benson seals it! Told ya to watch out for this kid!  ;)
Texas Tech was the only Big 12 school to offer him....the rest told him he was too small.  He is 6'3" and 200 pounds. I look for him to red-shirt in order to add more weight. He is a very good student in the classroom and works hard in the weigh room.  I look for him to have success at Tech.

Kid just made plays.

Class 3A Div 2 State Championship

Pleasant Grove 41

West Orange-Stark 21

FINAL

Congratulations to the Hawks on an unbelievable season.
It has been a fun ride watching these kids play. I watched several of these kids play in the youth leagues when they were 11 and 12 years old. I never expected that they would develop and grow to win a state championship. It just shows that you never know how kids are going to grow mentally and physically.

However, it does help to have an incredible coach that gives direction and a belief that you can be a winner.  Keep an eye on Josh Gibson. He is only 39 years old and is a rising star in Texas HS football.  I would like for him to stay at PG; however, I can see him going on to bigger and better opportunities.

And that wraps up another high school football season. This was the 19th HS/Texas commit preview I've done this season because we had some out of state commits who start their seasons earlier than Texas schools do. Its been a long season but it was fun to watch it all unfold again.

This was the third season I've done these previews of high school football and Texas commits here on Hornsports. This may have been the most enjoyable year for me yet. It was exciting.

I'll keep doing them as long as I'm able and am given some slack during deer season, lol.

2,400 page views, 156 replies over 7 pages . . . this is probably the best this thread has done in all the three years I've done it. Thanks a bunch guys!
Really appreciate you do these all year long, SHA!

Championship weekend was outstanding as I was fortunate to call Manvel v Highland Park and Cy-Fair v Midway.  My takes from the weekend:

  • Manvel v Highland Park was as entertaining of a football game as I've seen.  Highland Park QB John Stephen Jones just wouldn't let HP go away as his ability to extend plays was amazing.  Tremendous poise, especially after being sacked 7 times in the first half.  WR Cade Saustad of HP should have multiple offers as it was impossible for Manvel to match up with his 6-5 200 frame as Manvel tried 3 different defenders trying to match up.
  • Manvel displayed class and may have impressed more fans of high school football with how they handled themselves in defeat, especially QB Kason Martin.
  • Watched Carthage RB Keontay Ingram from field level as I wanted to see the UT verbal commit up close and he didn't disappoint.  Ingram has a frame that can add weight with no problem and he is such a smooth strider when carrying the rock.
  • The defensive line for Pleasant Grove made life miserable for WOS as the Mustangs simply couldn't block them which allowed the MLB to run free and make plays all night, which resulted in him winning the Defensive MVP.  Might want to take his DL out for dinner.
  • College Station QB Marquez Perez was the quickest player I saw all weekend.  I don't know what position he will play in college, but he is electrifying.
  • The worst moment of the weekend was Lake Travis QB Matthew Baldwin (Ohio St.) dropping back to pass on the first play of the game and having his right leg buckle and falling to the ground.  He was hurt vs. Katy in the State Semi-finals and in hindsight, shouldn't have played vs. Allen.  I wish the young man the best in his recovery.
  • I would have lost the bet of Cy-Fair being the school from the Houston area to win a State Championship.  Midway couldn't have played worst, but give the Bobcats credit for taking advantage of those mistakes.
