I was in Corpus Christie last week and saw two of the Hooks (AA) games. I'm certainly NO scout, but there seems to be several promising players there. The very small Tony Kemp can really play. He has outstanding speed on the base paths. The left hander Josh Hader pitched 5 very strong innings and then appeared to tire quickly. A young outfielder, Teoscar Hernandez (who had just been moved up) appeared slightly over matched, but you could see real talent- kid can really play the out field. The one player that I was disappointed in was Jonathan Meyer- to me he looked over weight and although reports say he has a good glove, he misplayed two balls in one inning- I think AA is about his upper limit. The young catcher Rene Garcia moves well and has a nice delivery to second base.
I did not see Mark Appel pitch, but did meet him and got his autograph- Exceptionally nice & polite.
The one player thou that impressed me the most was the newly acquired Colin Moran (#6 overall selection in last years draft- by Miami)- Some reports question his fielding- I saw three outstanding defensive plays- a really strong throwing arm- and an absolutely sweet stroke. If I remember correctly he had 2 hits the first night & a three run homer the second night. Having seen the Astros in spring training, I feel Moran is less than a year away. I think the Astros stole him in the Cosart trade.
I meant to add- the entire Hooks team, with the exception of Garcia & Moran, had trouble with off speed pitches.
