2017 Recruiting Thread Part 1

2018 DT/OL Silas Robinson of Yoakum

He is the son of former All-SWC Longhorn Bo Robinson

CB Chevin Calloway (Dallas Bishop Dunne) moved his OV back to Jan 13

His family will come with him -- often a good sign

"..... There are several defensive backs still on the radar for the Longhorns, including Blinn College cornerback Kendall Sheffield and Port Arthur Memorial cornerback Kary Vincent, but there is only one secondary spot left in the class, according to Calloway.

Considering that the consensus four-star prospect was thought to be high on Texas before committing to Iowa, the Longhorns should have a chance to secure Calloway’s signature after his January XX official visit to Austin.

When Calloway decides on National Signing Day, it will likely be between Texas and Arkansas, with the Razorbacks potentially holding a significant margin heading into the decisive month of January. In fact, 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions have been coming in since as early as August and continued into the last week, giving the Hogs 16 of 18 overall.

The Arkansas coaches also have a strong relationship with Calloway, who is originally from the Natural State....."
Arkansas defense is about to go through wholesale changes with DC Rob Smith likely leaving and several assistants also making moves. Will be interesting to see how this affects Calloway's decision.

I wonder if getting Calloway would help us with his high school teammate DT Damion Daniels. Or is Texas even interested in him?

From TFBs --

"Javelin Guidry: 2017 CB, Javelin Guidry (Vista Murrieta, CA) was once a Houston commit under the now current Texas staff. Guidry’s family moved to California this past summer but before that he attended and played at Cedar Park, HS in the Austin area.

I caught up with the father of Javelin Guidry who let me know that there has been quite a bit of communication between them and Texas. He added that should Texas offer they are tentatively scheduled to visit on January 27th."

"Some coaches like bigger CBs and some put a premium on speed regardless of size. Everyone prefers to have both but speaking to a source on the Texas side I’m told that Texas CB coach, Jason Washington covets speed and explosion over size. You’ll note that Washington promptly went after guys like Kary Vincent, Tre Brown and Chevin Calloway, three CBs that aren’t the biggest guys but move very well.

Guidry fits that mould. In fact he’s faster than Vinceny and Calloway and even slightly faster than Tre Brown (who is an elite sprinter as well). Guidry was the TX UIL 5a 100 m track champion. He ran a blazing 10.41. Guidry also ran an incredible 4.35 SPARQ verified laser 40. So he certainly has the type of speed/explosion that coach Washington is looking for. Guidry is on the smaller side at around 5’9.5 but I’ve seen him live a number of times and he can play multiple techniques and cover receivers with varying size and skill sets. – (Super K)"

Some more info on Keondre Coburn (2018 DT)

"It’s obvious that Texas has a connection to this recruitment in a few ways. The first is the Meekins family, as former Westfield HC Corby Meekins is the TE’s coach at Texas. Also his brother Matt Meekins, is the current head coach at Westfield. Texas also has one of Coburn’s teammates in 2017 RB Daniel Young committed to Texas.

When I asked Coburn if those connections to Texas give the Longhorns and edge he said the familiarity with them certainly helps Texas.

Coburn also let us know that he plans to attend a Texas jr. day in the coming month or so.

At 6’1 Coburn is a bit undersized but he has the ability to get to the QB which is a trait that fits Todd Orlando’s attacking base 3-4 defense.

With such an early offer it appears Coburn is somewhere near the top of Texas’ DT list and it certainly feels like the Longhorns could be tough to beat here. – (Andrew)
