Texas A&M's SEC move has impacted recruiting for Texas, Oklahoma

Texas A&M’s move to the SEC was supposed to unleash the entire conference upon the fertile recruiting grounds of the Lone Star State.

It has in many ways with Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU joining the Aggies among SEC squads that have poached elite talent out of Texas. The Big 12 still lands the bulk of the state’s elite talent, securing 59 signees ranked among the top 30 in Texas by ESPN recruiting analysts since 2012. But the SEC is second with 39, including 14 in the Class of 2015, the first year in which another conference has topped the Big 12 in top-30 signees since Texas A&M’s move.

Some conference schools have been impacted more than others while some Big 12 programs haven’t really felt a huge effect from the Aggies’ move. Here’s a look at the two programs that have been impacted the most and a pair that haven’t been affected too much.

Significant impact

Oklahoma: The Sooners have invested more into expanding their reach into the East Coast and California while still taking their shots at the top prospects in Texas. Make no mistake, Oklahoma has to compete with more schools for Texas’ elite than it has in the past, but the Sooners still win their share of battles while also going into ACC, SEC and Pac 12 territory to pick off ESPN300 signees such as California native Joe Mixon, Arizona native Mark Andrews, Florida native Ty Darlington and Virginia native Ricky DeBerry.

Meanwhile ESPN300 signees from Texas -- including P.J. Mbanasor, John Humphrey, Samaje Perine and Rodney Anderson -- still consider Oklahoma a good spot to play college football. The Aggies’ move to the SEC has impacted Oklahoma but, quite frankly, the Sooners should have been flexing their nationwide muscle more often before Texas A&M’s move to the SEC anyway.

Texas: There’s no two ways about it, the Longhorns have been hurt by the SEC invasion. And it’s not just Texas A&M and the SEC at the heart of the problem. Baylor’s emergence and Pac 12 forays into Big 12 country have made it difficult as well. Nonetheless, Texas, with 10 recruits ranked among the top 10 in Texas since 2012, remains the program that signs the most elite prospects in Texas. Poor evaluation and development has been just as big an issue, particularly before Charlie Strong’s arrival.

When Strong arrived, the Longhorns ventured into Florida early on, going head-to-head with the SEC thanks to Strong’s ties to the area. The Longhorns are no longer THE team to play for to most Texas recruits, but with better evaluation and development it shouldn’t matter. And as Strong builds local ties, the Longhorns’ ability to secure local talent should continue to grow. If Strong’s first class after a full recruiting cycle is any indication, the Longhorns are on the right track.

Minimal impact

Baylor: The rise of the Bears has been just as significant as the SEC’s larger influence in Texas. Baylor has landed four players ranked among Texas’ top 10 recruits since 2012, including receiver K.D. Cannon and quarterback Jarrett Stidham -- and Art Briles’ program is poised to add two more if receiver Devin Duvernay and guard Patrick Hudson sign with Baylor on Wednesday. Baylor has proven it can land Texas' elite, becoming a true player in an already crowded recruiting landscape.

Baylor’s ability to evaluate well and its willingness to go head-to-head with anyone in recruiting for a player it thinks fits its system is one of the foundations of Briles' program and a big reason for its rise. Those traits help lessen the impact of the SEC’s increased influence in Texas. Baylor has proven it can win some of those head-to-head battles while continuing to find hidden gems such as Chance Waz and Shock Linwood.

West Virginia: The Mountaineers’ primary recruiting grounds -- Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio -- aren’t for the faint of heart. When West Virginia lands an ESPN300 signee, such as Donte Thomas-Williams, Jovon Durante or Shelton Gibson, the Mountaineers often have to beat out the likes of Ohio State, Florida State, Alabama or other signature schools that recruit those areas.

West Virginia initially thought its move to the Big 12 would allow it to recruit Texas well, especially considering Dana Holgorsen’s coaching roots, but the Mountaineers eventually realized selling the chance to play in the Big 12 to East Coast recruits might be the more fruitful endeavor. The Aggies' move to the SEC really hasn't impacted the Mountaineers' recruiting efforts.

Trivia... Got my private pilot's license flying out of Nacogdoches. Been a while... trying to locate the cross-country log in my old book... But to say, I flew my required 3-legged solo cross country from Nacogdoches to Bryan (yep!), from there to Jefferson Co. Airport (Beaumount) and back to Nacogdoches. EDIT. Found it. The flight plan. Says Easterwood, College Station. I see it listed as CLL, but I wrote CCL in the log. Needless to say, was not done on a Garmin!

Some may know that Gordon Baxter of Beaumont area once wrote a column for FLYING magazine. He was from Pt. Arthur and I keep confusing him and his station with that of J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson who was at another radio station in Beaumont in the 50s at KTRM, Baxter at KPAC in Pt. Arthur but I always associated him with Beaumont. And, matter of fact, more triva, I was born in Beaumont.

In Nacogdoches, the instructor that gave my check ride told me, "I've flown over 14,000 hours and been all over the world, and coming back to Nacgodoches is like coming in out of the rain." Never forgot that. Can't say I completely agree with that, but sort of did at the time.
My girlfriend lives and goes to college in Nacogdoches and she really wants to get her private pilot's license before she finishes college. Cool story!

OB's Dunlap thinks Malclom Roach's (been a hard Texas commit for awhile) OV to USCe could be real

He points out how Roach decided to still take the trip even after Strong's in-home with him

Roach's dad is supposed to be going with him, and the dad has a long-standing good relationship with Haley (and thus Malcom has known Haley forever too)

Remember that is Muschamp now

Also, I think they are driving with the Taylors for this visit

From my perspective, it could be a depth chart issue as one of the few positions with depth we have is SSDE (along with RB and maybe CB)

Or, maybe they just want to take a trip?

Anytime a commit is visiting other schools I don't consider them a commit.

Don't be so damned picky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :D

I guess I will go with ...  Jackson then....

Suchomel shut down any rumors that Jordan Elliott might  take a visit somewhere else this weekend

He says not happening and that Strong will be there on Saturday for in-home

--------

Suchomel also says Kyle Porter really "clicked" with Strong, so in his opinion, Porter to TCU is not a done deal

----------

"Patrick Hudson - ...... One person I talked to tonight said Hudson's visit to UT really was a terrific visit.  In fact, the person I spoke with thought Hudson, in his heart, favors Texas over Baylor.  That being said, people at Baylor are very confident that Art Briles locked Hudson back in when he met with Hudson and his mother this week.  Unconfirmed rumor ...  I heard this week some speculation that Baylor is giving his sister a partial track scholarship. Texas is not able to do that, so if that is true (and I still haven't confirmed), that would lock it up for Baylor. Bottom line, Hudson really likes Texas so anything is possible in the next six days, but I think he sticks with Baylor.

Any news on the Fowler in home visit

OB's (Suchomel) latest -- "Erick Fowler - Man, I am truly conflicted on this one. I hear one thing that makes me think Texas gets him, then I'll hear something else a few minutes later that makes me think he sticks with LSU. LSU did an in-home on Thursday and I expect Texas will do the same on Friday or Saturday. I lean every so slightly to him going with his childhood favorite and sticking with LSU, but this one could go either way."

I was told after his visit Porter was in, this came from a staff member.  I'll stick with that for now.

re: Hudson --  IT says Shane Buechele and some of the current players are making a full-court press for him.

They say he is listening.  And that they all believe this OL class will be the best in conference

But, IT adds we have not been pursuing his twin sister very much

My solution is Patrick to Texas and his sister to Baylor. With skype, email, and phone they can always be in touch. We get a top rated OL and Baylor gets a woman's track star. Everybody wins.

When I flew there, they had a grass runway as well (90 degrees to the surfaced runway). Great for instructor time practicing cross-wind landings on an open field, which is what you might incur making an emergency landing with no choice as to direction of runway. It's a great airport and location in E. Texas to fly out of. Wish her the best!
