Directors Cup Thread

As some of you are aware, Texas ended a streak of 25 straight Director's Cup victories for Stanford this past year by taking home our first Director's Cup championship. Overall, winning the cup requires high level performances by almost all of Texas's 20 NCAA teams. Stanford, and schools with a large number of competing sports, is at a significant advantage in the Director's Cup as your top 19 finishes can score points (the avg number of teams fielded by Div 1 schools is 19). Stanford has 29 sports teams and many of these are in small sports with a small group of teams competing (beach VB, field hockey, water polo). Texas has been one of the most consistent teams in the Director's Cup with a handful of 2nd place finishes and ranks in the top 5 with 21 top 10 finishes. 

As a way to monitor our overall athletic department success this year, I will track our team finishes and compare them to last season as a sign of progress or regression. I hope these periodic updates are appreciated and help remind everyone that our athletic department is one of the tops in the nation, even when our football team is floundering.

Things are looking good for men's hoops and, of course, baseball too. If only we had a football team worth bragging about.

Updated to show pre-season ranking updates for baseball and tennis. All 3 teams start ranked very highly after having great NCAA finishes last year and returning lots of talent. Baseball has been discussed in detail elsewhere.

Reigning champs W tennis brings back 5 key Freshmen players from last years team and added the extremely talented Zamarippa twins.

Mens tennis also picks up where they left off with a #3 ranking.

I would expect rowing to be ranked in the top 3 from the start to the end of the season to give us another high scoring team in the spring.

Updated to show Week 1 rankings for indoor track and field. Both Men and Women's teams have high expectations with ranks of #1 and #2 respectfully. A good indoor season also likely has a good correlation to a good outdoor season in the Spring so these team's successes could lead to 4 good scores in the directors cup. 

Softball also looks poised for another solid season with ranks between 9-12.

Out of curiosity I filled out the rest of the season based on current rankings. Rowing and outdoor T&F do not have rankings yet so I assumed conservative rankings of 3rd for rowing and 10th for both track teams. 

Last years athletic program scored 1252 to win the cup. This years team would score 1308.25 (Mens CC points don't get included as you can only include top 19 scores). So, if the results hold, this team would outperform last years championship program. That said, Stanford is regularly scoring 1500+ points to take home the championship so we need them to stumble across the board. Their large and successful athletic department really gives them an advantage in this scoring system.

Sharing here as we don't have a T&F thread. This is a huge pick up for women's Track. Bowerman finalist (Heisman of track and field) and field athlete of the year. Grad Transferring from A&M of all places. She will be a favorite for NCAA Gold in High Jump, Long Jump and Heptathalon/Pentathalon events. She outscored the entire Texas track team at the indoor meet last year and nearly did so in the outdoor championship as well. Team was already ranked #3 so this addition will really help in the bid for 2 National Championships.

A few items to update:

1. I erroneously failed to give women's cross country a ranking and points. We didn't not send a full team to NCAAs but by sending 1 runner we were granted a tied for 32nd ranking (31 teams competed) and 27 points. Read on to see why this mistake is likely a moot point.

2. Men's track and field bumped up to #1 and women's up to #2. I am not sure that the women's rankings are factoring in Tyra Gittens or not but as mentioned above she will really help this team score some points at NCAAs. 

3. A note on scoring. I mentioned in the OP that your 19 top scores are counted but I should clarify that Football, Men's and Women's Basketball and Baseball must be included in the 19 scores used. In other words, you get scores for those 4 sports and then use your next highest 15. 

Bummer for Texas is that this means the 0 points scored for football will be included in our final tally. However, using Stanford as the gold standard, we still have a chance since Stanford also did not play a bowl game in football. Further, they are also likely to score a 0 for men's basketball as they are not looking like a NCAA tourney team currently.

If our current predicted results stand, Texas will score points in all 20 sports except football. Since we have to count football, it is likely that our Women's CC score of 27 will be dropped in the final scoring and if that is the case, that means we have had a very successful year across the board.

A few important updates:

Women's Track and Field made the jump up to #1 in the rankings this week. We have very strong sprinters and jumpers (not great at distance or throwing). Tyra Gittens made her presence felt in high jump and long jump by entering the top 5 in both events nationally.

Rowing has been ranked #1 in the preseason polls. Stanford also received some first place votes with Washington being a clear 3rd. I don't think it is too early to say we are a top 3 lock, if not top 2 at this point.

After dropping to #6 in the rankings, the men's indoor track and field team secured a national championship. This was a team with no short distance runners but a strong field and distance running contingent. The story here is how the runners outperformed their expected finishes to pick up valuable points to surge up the leaderboard.

Jonathon Jones and Yusuf Bizimana were the 4th and 6th best 800 M runners coming into the meet but both improved their ranking by 2 spots by finishing 2nd and 4th respectively.

Crayton Carrozza finished 7th in the mile while coming in outside of the top 10 rankings.

The 4X400 team finished 2nd despite coming in with a top 7 ranking.

Texas won the Distance Medley Relay despite posting the 10th best time before the NCAAs.

Adrian Pipieri took 2nd in shot put as expected. 

Leo Neugebbaur took 3rd in the heptaltathon.

Those 7 scores totaled to 47 points, outscoring NC AT&T by 11 points and the other UT by 16 points.

The women's track and field team took home 2nd place. After reaching #1 in the rankings, the team entered the NCAA meet ranked #3 overall. This was a team buoyed by sprinters and jumpers. Florida really ran away with this meet, they even scratched their 4x400 team at the end of the meet because they held a 20 point lead in the team standings.

Julien Alfred came in as a top 3 60 M sprinter and set the collegiate record in prelims. She ran a bit slower in the finals and took home 5th while Rhasidat Adeleke outperformed her ranking by finishing 8th and securing 1 point for the team standings.

Texas had 4 runners in the top 11 in the 200 M coming into the meet and secured 4th 5th and 8th place finishes by Rhasidat, Kynnedy Flannel and Julien Alfred respectively. 

Kennedy Simon and Stacey Williams entered the 400 M as the 6th and 7th ranked runners but finished in 2nd and 3rd place.

No surprise that Texas has a strong 4x400 squad given the above finishes. They came in with the 4th best time this season and finished in 2nd place.

Valery Tobias was not expected to earn points in the 800 M event but but ran a personal best to finish 4th overall.

Tyra Gittens finished 2nd in the high jump. Surprisingly she didn't place in the long jump. 

Ackelia Smith finished 6th in the triple jump as a freshmen. 

Kristine Blazevica came in ranked 2nd in the pentathalon and ended up with a 6th place finish.

Stanford did not make the NCAA tournament in men's hoops so will be forced to take a 0. That's 2 goose eggs for Stanford.

Women's S&D took home second this past week. Virginia was stacked and ran away with the championship. Texas edged out Stanford who finished 3rd.

Men's hoops will finish tied 17th.

Women's hoops will do no worse than tied for 9th but no doubt they have a shot at winning the whole thing.

Men's Swimming and Diving took home a 2nd place finish today, losing out to Cal. Cal and Texas have been the 2 teams battling it out in recent years. Texas has had a sizable diving advantage but did not this year and Cal was able to edge them out. Stanford finished 7th which is good but does gives Texas a points advantage for the Directors Cup.

Women's basketball has secured a top 5 finish by making the elite 8. Beating Stanford would be huge not only for the team itself but also to gain some points in this contest.
