I bid you fare well.

Listen to what JimR says about talking to friends about politics or religion.
Not to discount our online relationships, but most of us aren't very close friends.

Otherwise, why do we feel compelled to use anonymous handles?  I thought the HS board was the perfect forum for debate on most topics.

no one said anything about "close" friends.
Close friends Jim. You're right there on the other end of my computer screen. That's close, no? ;)

2nd. . .if you do go. . .for the record I hate "look at me. . .I'm leaving" posts. . .if you are going. ..just leave. ..

As far as opinions go.  ..i think everyone is entitled to mine. . .. :P

We were never odds.

Sometimes I may be a little too quick to pull the trigger on a thread if I think it may have a negative effect on our community.

I'm not always right but, my intentions were good.

Though, I would tread lightly around Michael Sam until you are sure about how he feels about the issue ... just sayin'!  He is bigger and proly meaner than most of youse!  ;)

I have received some good feedback from some of the staff at Hornsports as well as some of the very kind posters here. I am sorry to say that I am not leaving Hornsports!  Sorry!  You lost your chance!  Now, you will just have to put up with me!  ;)

I have tried to explain what was going on with me regarding the Michael Sam thread to some folks who reached out to me personally.  I am appending an abridged and combined version of that explanation here.  It seems to me that folks at Hornsports, both staff and members, are good people.  For personal reasons, I have some pretty strong opinions about some things. I do not apologize for that.  If I offended anybody, I DO apologize for that.  By the same token, if I perceive that any of you have offended me ... well, woe be unto you!  ;)

I was never upset with the thread that was deleted or anything that anyone said, even if they disagreed with me.  In fact I thought that the thread was resolving the discussion quite well with people that were differing in opinion commenting on how they were impressed with how well such a potentially explosive discussion had seemed to be well handled by all concerned.  One of the staff members took issue with something I had commented on regarding a particular statement that they had made.  Something like, "I have lots of friends that are gay, and I love them all, but that does not mean that I have to like their life style."  Too me, that is either a statement made by someone who has not thought through what they are saying, or it is an out and out prejudicial statement.  I immediately went to personal mail  to try to explain that I was questioning the sentiment of the statement, not accusing them of being homophobic.  I went back to the board to check and see exactly what had been said, and the thread had been deleted.  I usually do not take anything that anyone says on a forum of any kind personally, but I have to admit that I blew up, and that is when I posted this "I quit ..."  thread.

I do not get upset about much in life, especially since there is just a lot of stuff that you just cannot control.  But, I have to admit, that for reasons that I will not go into here, there are three things that I will not tolerate - racism, sexism, and homophobia.  I am an old fart with rheumatoid arthritis, BUT I will fight over these issues.  Despite the intensity that I feel over these issues, all I was trying to do was clarify another's comment and how it came across to me.

I talked to Darrell this morning at length.  I am certain that he only did what he thought was best for the forum by deleting the thread.  He said that maybe he should not have done so.  Sometimes making executive decisions are difficult, and sometimes their is no "best" choice.  Personally, I think he has a right to do whatever he wishes, and I think that he and I have a pretty good idea of where the other is coming from.   I intend to have a discussion in the near future by PM with the aforementioned Hornsports staff member.  I am sure that we can come to some understanding of where the other is coming from.

Someone who responded to me by personal e-mail said, "I am an old man who has learned one thing, Do Not join into a conversation that deals with anything that you hold dear to you."  I can only say that sometimes what you hold dear to you takes precedence.  Let me relate an incident from a few years ago.  I grew up in West Texas.  I married a first generation Bessarabian Jew from New York City.  One Friday after work I was in a grocery store at Bee Caves Road and 360 here in Austin.  I came upon a loud phone conversation in progress in the next aisle over.  It was a mother chastising her daughter for inviting a certain classmate to a sleepover that night.  You could tell that the daughter had asked her mother why.  Her mother responded, "Honey!  You know that we do not allow Jews in our home!"  How would you have responded, if at all?  Well, I responded.  I berated that "poor" woman out of the supermarket all the way to her car.  Probably the only reason that I did not get arrested was because I am an old fart.

Please pardon the intensity of my reaction.   I just feel that some things cannot stand.  Sometimes they are real, sometimes they are ephemeral.   After talking with Darrell this morning, probably much to the chagrin of some, I am not leaving Hornsports.  Don't be too enthused with this news!  Be forewarned!  I have WORDS, and I am not afraid to use them!  ;)
