2026 PORTAL

ESPN says Texas has the #4 portal class in the nation. I'll try real hard to see that as a failure.

As for Coleman, what is wrong with the guy other than he redshirted? People talked him up like they did Cojoe.

There's nothing wrong with having someone on your existing depth chart move into that one spot. We have several candidates who have had time in the system now. Most of those guys can play both G or T.

The only thing Texas didn't do was land a top notch guard. There were only a few in the pool to begin with and Texas did their part to win those battles, offering much more to the Michigan duo than Michigan did. Then the Wisconsin guy wanted to stay in the midwest. That's bad luck, not failure. The rest of their OL work was spot on.

AWESOME! I watched this on TV. Earl's senior year. This team went undefeated with McEacherin the rest of the season... until Joe Montana and Notre Dame played spoiler in the Cotton Bowl.
I was at that game. Froze my tail off watching Montana and Ken McAfee torch Texas over the middle. Wished I had stayed home by the fireplace and watched it on TV. Long drive back home.

FWIW here is an article explaining how it's possible.

Reminds me of Animal house:

Quotes19. [the Deltas have been expelled] Bluto: Christ. Seven years of college down the drain. Might as well join the fucking Peace Corps.

That game was one of my early sports heartbreaks..... I think the worst I ever felt as a sports viewer was the 83 (season) Cotton Bowl. I was in high school by this time.... Man, that hurt.

Took me a while to figure out what MeChicken was. at first I thought you were talking about a McDonalds menu item.

Haha! Sorry....

You'd think had plan B. Hate think of Coleman as 2nd team.1 injury
I think that last year's experience at LG has soured us all on the prospect of promoting players to a starting role who exist on the roster.

Maybe Coleman will be good? He's as big as a mountain, and he has some athleticism. Dare I say... maybe he's been developed?

We almost forget that this was the way of the world like.... two years ago.

Nothing. He's as big as a building and athletic! Also, he stayed at Texas and didn't leap in the portal... Nothing at all!

I think we're all a bit gun-shy for two reasons:

1. Like it or not, Texas has a hype machine second to none. Political parties ought to hire the likes of On Texas Football - and they would never lose an election. Going into every season, we are convinced that Texas has way more talent than they did the previous season, because every recruiting class is the best thing that ever existed.... from three star uncovered jewels to four stars that should have been five stars to five stars that are better than our departing All-Americans. I remember Bobby Burton saying that Wingo was a better prospect than Jeremiah Smith... as one example.

2. PTSD from last season. We were told this time last year - that the coaches liked what they had on campus and advised no portal additions. Specifically in the OL and WR rooms. Then, Umeozulu (slotted to be the LG in 2025 for two years) was inexplicably beaten out by Stroh - and we were told it was because Stroh looked SO GOOD! I don't think Umeozulu (who On Texas Football said was a better run-blocker than any starting guard for two years) ever saw the field? Stroh was so bad we couldn't pass or run...people ran through the left interior like Olympic sprinters! Stroh was replaced by Brooks (hyped up by On Texas Football as a unicorn) and things may have gotten worse.

The bottom line is, that I believe a lot of people are not believing what they hear reported in the Burnt Orange media. Furthermore, they don't trust player evaluations from the coaching staff - reported by said media. We whiffed on guards in the portal - I think we all agree. But now hearing that Coleman looks good causes us pause based on PTSD.

I hope Coleman is a champ. As a matter of fact, if he is.... this offense takes on a whole new optimistic look!

I remember back in the day sitting out in my parents car listening to Longhorn football games because the car got better AM reception. This was the late 70's early 80's. Man, I'm old now.
I remember carrying a radio outside, and listening to Texas games while shooting hoops. Same timeframe as you. My Texas fandom began Earl's senior year (1977?) Fred Akers first year at Texas....

My first memorable game on TV was Texas beating Navy in 1964 Cotton Bowl followed by 1965 Orange Bowl of Texas beating #1 Alabama and Joe Namath.
