Longhorn News/Discussion (Non-Recruiting)

On the recruiting support staff, IT reporting that Bryan Carrington, Jake Langi and Brandon Harris have been retained.

They expect an influx of new names with Texas ties to help newly hired Drew Hughes, and the budget has supposedly increased quite a bit.

If you want to add these guys to your Twitter follows, their names are below.

HOW QUICKLY CAN STEVE SARKISIAN GET THE TEXAS TRAIN ROLLING?

There’s talent on hand in Austin, and Texas probably wasn’t as far off in 2020 as many realized. The Longhorns’ three losses came by a combined five regulation points, with less than a touchdown separating Texas coach Tom Herman from a special season or being let go at the end of the year. Now Steve Sarkisian steps into a situation where he has talent on defense and one of the Big 12’s top offensive talents in running back Bijan Robinson. Expect him to get the ball a lot as the Longhorn quarterback situation gets settled—one of the biggest positives of Sarkisian at Alabama was that he identified his playmakers, then got them the ball a whole bunch. So what is the Longhorns’ prognosis for this season? If Texas can close out close games, Sarkisian could start off more quickly than some think. In turn, that could help the Longhorns restore recruiting momentum that was lost late in the Tom Herman era.

21. Texas Longhorns

Tom Herman went 1-4 against Oklahoma, which is one of the reasons Steve Sarkisian is the new boss in Austin. So let's start there: Any breakthrough at Texas will begin with getting over the hump against Lincoln Riley. Since Mack Brown's exit in 2013, the past eight Red River Showdown games have been decided by a total of 52 points, an average of 6.5 points per game, but the Longhorns are just 2-6 in those. The road schedule is a little salty: at old rival Arkansas, at Baylor, at Iowa State, at West Virginia and a trip to TCU, which is 6-1 against Texas since 2014. Sarkisian will have to find out if Casey Thompson is for real after a near-perfect Alamo Bowl performance, but RB Bijan Robinson gives him an offensive centerpiece to build around. If the Longhorns can finally knock off the Sooners, they'll start to believe. -- Wilson

Also from IT, OL Derek Kerstetter is not with the team currently while rehabbing his ankle injury.

It's unclear at this time if he'll be back, and if the new staff will try to convince him to do so.
