He shouldn’t be on scholarship. He’s there for one reason, football. If he takes that one thing out of the equation, the answer should be 0.
Wait I thought they were “student-athletes”?? So he’s there for one reason... football. That would mean they aren’t really student-athletes. Instead they are athletes. So I guess we should start paying these athletes. So he could then decide if he wants to get a paycheck this season taking a risk of exposure. Or he can sit and not get paid. But since that’s not the case. He should be allowed to sit and keep his scholarship since it’s not his fault a virus is running through the world.

The benefit of playing for the university is a free education and resources to train towards your next level in football. If you take away your commitment to the school, why should the school be expected to uphold their commitment? They are being paid. Would he be there if he didn’t play football? Maybe, why do you think he wouldn’t? I don’t have to check out the cost of tuition and housing, I went there. I don’t have to check out the cost of to be an athlete. I’m friends with plenty of them. The will tell you should look at the cost of them being a student athlete. They wake earlier than a normal student. They are expected to practice, lift, study film, & then be a student as well. They have to travel on weekends & then make it to class like a normal student. They get free gear, that’s cool. But how about this.. get back to me about how much an individual player brings in revenue. It’s out there. Look at it. Then tell me they aren’t bring in more money then they “receive”. Ask yourself, if the university really thought it would be cheaper to pay the player and let them pay for their room and board. Don’t you think the schools would be pushing for that? They know they are getting a bargain. The free gear is nothing when you consider, the school wouldn’t get that gear or the dollars from Nike if the athletes weren’t here. So it’s not really free gear. The company wants the athletes in it. If the athlete can sign a deal with Nike, they would be getting free gear anyway. Come guy. It’s not that hard to see that this players have way more value than they are compensated for. Free tuition is great but there are plenty of students there on academic scholarship receiving that. They aren’t bring in the same revenue.
I agree. I was listening to a coach this summer on the radio. I believe it was the Wake Forest coach and he said that any player that did not want to play and risk their health this year then the university would support them and they would not be punished.

No, but the academic side or the academic draw is what makes Texas, Texas. Texas can match up athletically and academically with the best there is. Or at least some years we line up athletically in that neighborhood.
That’s your reasoning? It’s part of being good and so the team is good? That’s a dumb reason but I will go with it. So they are doing more stuff to be good at the athlete part, more than the normal student... so they should again be compensated for doing more than their peers.
Don’t work out, study film and bust your ass in practice and see where you find yourself as a football player. That’s not extra, that’s expected. If you don’t, you won’t be with the team long. You’ll be encouraged to find opportunity elsewhere. Pay them? Tuition is payment. Use of facilities is payment. Those facilities can help them achieve their ultimate dream of playing in the NFL. Better yet, take advantage of a world class education that a lot of their peers are actually PAYING FOR THEMSELVES!!!!!!! You keep saying they’re getting the same thing the rest of the students are getting. What percentage of the student body is on full academic scholarship, free place to stay, meal plan like the common student isn’t offered, all the athletic gear, and free use of a top of the line workout facility with a free S&C coach at your service???? How many students get that?
