Tulsa led the nation in offensive plays per game this year. Also scored less than 38 points in a game only 3 times this year.

SignUp Now!Gilbert didn't call plays at Tulsa - and there is some question as to how much he called plays at BG. That said - I think play-calling experience is pretty far down the list of qualifications I'd care about.Take Gilbert. He calls plays and Cumbie didn't. Better choice. Also a prior Tx H.S. coach.
That's what I have heard also.Gilbert has solid Texas ties, but doesn't have the name recognition that someone like Cumbie would have. By all accounts he is a good offensive mind and would fit what Texas wants to achieve. He is the Co-OC at Tulsa, but it has been said he has called plays previously.
Good questionWere some BMD's wanting Cumbie and forcing Strong to go that route? I haven't heard that but considering some of the BMD's still believe they run the program, its not the least bit surprising.
I agree. And thanks to those who responded to my post earlier. I've liked his style of offense and history of play-calling when I started reviewing that stuff a few weeks back. But recruiting was an unknown for me. You solve that by hitting home runs at the position coach level. From what I've read, it sounds like the one true advantage Cumbie had over Gilbert was recruiting. Just hire some recruiting rainmakers to fill out the staff and I'm good to go.
Higdon already reported that there were two other candidates (aside from Cumbie) one of whom hasn't been mentioned yet. Might be that Charlie interviews one more before offering it.Now Anwar Richardson on OB's is saying that he learned that there might possibly be a 3rd candidate.
FWIW - Higdon says that one of the sticking points is that Texas was unwilling to offer a third year guaranteed to Cumbie. Thats despite being the 'hot candidate' there were concerns about his lack of play-calling and they weren't willing to break with tradition of two year deals for assistants to hire Cumbie.
Yea...I saw that. And like you said in an earlier postFWIW - Higdon says that one of the sticking points is that Texas was unwilling to offer a third year guaranteed to Cumbie. A couple days ago, Chip mentioned that the 3rd candidate was actually promoting Traylor and surround him with top tier position coaches/recruitersHigdon already reported that there were two other candidates (aside from Cumbie) one of whom hasn't been mentioned yet. Undoubtedly I'd expect him to bring Matt Mattox along as OL coach.Similar to discussions about Cumbie, any thoughts on who Gilbert would add to the staff if hired?
In addition to Mike Maddox as the OL coach, I've seen the name of Luke Wells. I think he is currently the OC and Recruiting Coordinator at Utah State.Similar to discussions about Cumbie, any thoughts on who Gilbert would add to the staff if hired?
