Why briles?

Everyone looks at this season and hot coaches, but look back at briles career.

His win loss record accumulated over 6 years is not impressive, he doesn't scream he can take texas and turn them around any time soon.

Briles this year was lucky to have a big 12 with all young qbs, except for texas which was the only veteran team in the big 12.

I would never want briles to be a coach at texas longhrons, Saban, fisher, gus malzahn is my list

UH from 1997-2002 was worse...and I agree there are better options, but give him an unlimited budget for Assistants and then make a judgment.

I could live with Briles. But I think you end up paying more than you should for a coach his age without at least a MNC under his belt or something comparable.

I don't like his age, but I do like his exciting football. There would need to be some sort of mandatory Hornsports-board approved defensive coordinator hire made to accompany him though.

He knows Texas HS football, that's for sure. But I think we do better with the cash we're carrying.

Gus doesn't have a career to look back on.

Fisher hasn't really killed it at a talent rich school in a weak conference. Look at his bad losses each year.

You can make stats say what you want. Shoot, I'd keep Mack if we can get Brewster back so he can recruit the VY's of the world. If we recruit Manziel we are in the bcs this year.

Point being, it's not black and white, there aren't any guarantees. Briles has turned around one of the worst teams in college football historically and won a conference championship, a heisman and is in the bcs. He's been successful every where he's been. He's no guarantee but I think you are selling him short by just looking at the record. He didn't have anything to work with.

I am concerned with what kind of staff he would put together. He just has always seemed like a small town coach to me. Texas is a different breed of job.

He may well be hired here and be very successful, but for some reason, I am not completely bought in.

To be honest, I hope we don't have to find out how he would do here. There is one that I really want. I hope he says yes.

No guarantee with anyone. Texas is a different place. Even Saban has shown issues with stopping a good spread attack. He'd see one more than twice in this league.

Eventually you have to take a chance on someone...

DKR was 17-13 B4 Texas, Fred Akers was 10-13 and Mack was 87-82-1. Give Briles the advantages that Texas has and he'll light it up, IMO.

The thought of Briles at Texas scares other programs like OU. Not sure any other candidate except maybe Saban generates the same fear. Ask yourselves why this is the case and remember how horrific UH and BU were when Briles took over those programs.

The thing Briles brings to the table that is appealing is:

1. A Texas boy, knows the state, and can keep the relationship between the High School Association on a positive note. (Brown did a tremendous job at this when he arrived. The aggies had a strong hold prior to his arrival. Don't think this is not important.)

2. The ability to RECRUIT and EVALUATE athletes.

Not saying he is the best candidate and there are other factors but I think of these 2 qualities when I think of him.

Did you not see the progression in your OP? Thats what is so impressive. He also has shown the ability to evaluate and develop recruits. QB's most of all and he did all this at UH and Baylor. Both programs were bad before he got there. He's a homerun

It doesn't matter what name is brought up, there is going to be some group that doesn't like them.

Briles has a lot going for him. Are there better options out there? Yes, but are they realistic options?

Only things I have against Briles is age, and will he recruit nation wide. I know he knows Texas but I want a coach that recruits Texas very well and adds some out of state guys.
