Who Else

All I really needed to know was that he was the anti Mack. Once I started researching him I could not believe just how good of a fit he could potentially be. I understand why people had reservations about him in regards to the big names. The Big names are a more known commodity. We hear about them all the time. With a guy like Strong you have to research a little before seeing the potential.
Ironically if we would have hired him last year, right after the big win over a highly ranked Florida team, people would probably had less issues.

I am liking the hire and think he has a good chance to be a great hire.

Super excited right now.
My only concern is that he knows the importance of keeping the Longhorn Nation together, especially the former players. I want Texas to still be that place that alums and former players love and can come together.

I'm not worried about the football side of it, I think he will do a dynamite job.

I just hope he is more like DKR and less like Mackovic when it comes to PR etc

Overall I am excited to leave the country club era behind us

Have to confess that while I was intrigued about the possibility of Saban, I had some vague misgivings as to whether we would be giving up too much for the prospect of immediate gratification. While there's no question Saban has gotten results, I have often wondered about the cost (in terms of integrity, culture, etc.). And there's always the "past performance is no guarantee of future results" issue.

I don't feel the same anxiety about Strong, for whatever reason (rationalization, drinking the Kool-Aid, whatever). Seems like the man has a really strong sense of honor and commitment, and is not simply a mercenary out to achieve success at any cost.

Yeah, Saban might have given us success for a few years, but at his age he probably wouldn't have been a long-term play. What would be a coup would be to sign the next Saban, Fisher, Harbaugh, etc.--they were all unknowns once. I'm getting more comfortable with the notion that to the extent one can confidently predict any of this stuff, Strong shows as much promise as anyone could. I'm kind of excited.

I understand that reasonable minds can differ on these issues; I'm merely expressing one viewpoint.

Been on the Stronghorn badwagon for a few weeks, myself.

Welcome aboard!

Hey McPhaul, really like this place. Here are my 2 cents...

I think he is exactly what we need at this point in the life of Texas Football.

When his (Strong's) name started popping up, I was entrenched in the Saban\Fisher\Harbaugh camp. When I started reading about him and hearing about his desire to coach here, I knew he was someone that I could get behind. That being said, I was disappointed for a brief time after it became official especially with regard to "losing out" on Saban. The main reason being because of the "in your face\middle finger" to the college football world it would have been. Watching ESPN and its minions(I'm looking at you Finnebaum) eat its words would have been glorious to watch the next few months. In addition, I think a Saban hire could have gotten the big name cable\Satellite providers to go "all-in" on the LHN.

As others have pointed out, no hire was going to be backed 100%. Honestly I was initially quite worried about what kind of gap that Strong was going to have to overcome at the mass fan base level. I did see some one on another board lamenting that they wish we still had MBTF. But it looks like there are many are starting to warm up to him, more quickly than I anticipated, after they get a feel for what he is going to bring to Texas football. We might have a year or two of struggles as he gets his team and system in place but I think the days of us being labeled as soft are gone.

Well said. And I agree that past success does not guarantee future success. The two main reason I wanted Saban was the immediate recruiting boost, and the perception that the best coach in college football wanted to come to Texas. Now I am hoping that in a few years everyone will say we have to best coach in college football.

Is getting more excited every day?
After doing extensive research on Strong, I have to admit, I am now anticipating next season and ushering the the new era.
For some reason I am not excited about this hire. I think the defensive side of the ball will flourish and the offensive side will suffer. (Reminds me of the Akers years)

I have worked my way into keeping an open mind. That's all. If Strong is any good, that's all he'll need.

4 years ago we were stoked about HCIW Mushamp.

Then 2-3 years ago, the succession plan was Chris Petersen with Harsin starting the transition.

I believe we are in better shape than those plans.

Couldn't agree more!

Understandable, but I keep telling myself defense wins championships. We would have suffered on the defensive sides with Briles, or a Sumlin-type. The OC hire and system will be critical. I just want a consistent offensive system, and personnel, going forward.

For the first time in 4 years I'm pumped about the upcoming season. I realize the QB situation is shaky and UT is losing some key defensive players. Hopefully Strong can convince Reed to come back.

We all know that coaching matters, look at what Robinson was able to do with this years defense. The OC hire is maybe more important than the HC hire at this point.

I cannot wait to finish the recruiting season and move into Spring practice. After reading coach Strongs resume as a Defensive Coordinator, it's borderline criminal how long it took to get his 1st HC job.

I'm pumped for the 1st time in years. I've missed this feeling.

That would mean all the information completely missing in "breaking news." Which is why there is a need for solid full reportage, and make that the story. In other words, make a story the story.

I'm on board, too.

I am so pumped. Anxious to get the staff solidified and lock down a few final recruits for this year like Soloman and Harvey. And then Spring practice! It is going to be much more exciting offseason now! And can you imagine Fall???? :)

Winning is important but not at the expense of your integrity and I feel Charlie Strong will do things the right way.

Someone used the phrase 'Strong and Smart' after the BYU and we now have Charlie Strong and it is time for Shaka Smart.

I've gone from feeling underwhelmed and frankly a little disappointed Friday night to feeling like we may have found the right coach for the right time at Texas. We all wanted a change in culture and that's what we will get with Strong. He's going to build Texas back up by working our way back up to the top.

With that said, the OC hire is going to be critical. From everything I've read, Strong has a history of letting his OC run the show on that side of the ball so I hope we bring in the best guy possible along with a few other key position guys that can recruit Texas.

Let the Strong era begin...kick some ass Charlie!!!!!
