Thank God my bride and I were no longer at the Co-op - where we were the day before.  She and I actually walked the campus a little the previous day.  I was slap dab in the middle of med school, and we left Austin that evening.

No one really knows today why Whitman went off his rocker.

I was at our towns country club swimming listening to the radio. It was shocking, the first mass shooting. It turned out he had a brain tumor.

I was having lunch in the restaurant on top of the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage when the news flashed. A terrible day.

The other day that I specifically remember where I was is November 23, 1963. I was returning home from class at the Texas Law School and had just turned into my driveway when it came over the radio that Kennedy had been shot. Also a terrible day. The whole world changed for the worse on that day, it seemed.

A little over 48 years ago to the day Charles Whitman was standing atop the Texas Tower taking shots. Today we remember. The whole attack was 96 minutes long and went from a little before noon to after 1. 13 people were dead another 35 injured. Here I wanted to share this excerpt from a book I saw and read, it's very cool, a little long, but worth the read. Here is the link: http://alcalde.texasexes.org/mondaymonday/

The Tower shooting happened the week after my first visit to Austin and the UT campus.  I was in Austin with 750 other young men from every county in the State of Texas for the American Legion's Boy's State convocation, an exercise in government for young men in the State of Texas in the summer before their Senior years in high school.  A week before the shooting, from  Monday through Friday, at sun up and sun down, there were 750 young men standing in formation for the flag raising and lowering at the feet of the steps of the Tower on the south side.

My wife and I also have a friend who was a junior at the University that summer.  She was in pre-med and now practices in Philadelphia.  She pulled a shot victim to safety on the north side of the Tower.  Interesting how such things as aggie dressing rooms are just not very important in remembrance of times such as these.

celebrating summer vacation between 1st and 2nd grade. probably in the neighborhood pool, blissfully ignorant of the horror on the campus i'd attend in a few years.

Edwards AFB elementary school. . . .they assembled us all in the cafeteria. . .2nd grade . .. .

My mom frequently saw Jackie at Church when she was visiting her mom on the Cape. .. . to my knowledge they never met or spoke

I was ten years old, on summer vacation, hanging out at my grandparents' jewelry store in Atlanta, Texas. We listened to the reports on the radio.  Terrible day, indeed.

Years later, don't think my grandparents were too keen on me going to UT.

My wife and my friend, the one who was a junior pre-med student who pulled a shot person to safety she was from Atlanta, Texas.  She was obviously a bit older than you.  Her name is Linda Clark.

You should ask Linda if she ever did any business at J. R. Cash Jewelry Store in Atlanta. They were in business there for 50 years.

I am sure that she or her family did, she grew up there.  We just re-established contact with her after many years out of contact.  I will ask when I talk to her next.
