Vince Young trying out for Cleveland Browns

Vince will have time to learn the playbook this year, unlike last year with the Packers.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have signed quarterbacks Vince Young and Tyler Thigpen to one-year contracts, the club announced today.

They also signed linebacker Zac Diles, an eighth-year pro. All three players tried out during the Browns three-day minicamp this week.

The two 30-year-old quarterbacks join Brian Hoyer and Alex Tanney on the roster and will have a rookie to compete with after next week's draft.

Coach Mike Pettine said that Young showed flashes of his old No. 3 overall pick self during the three-day minicamp, but also joked with Young that "the rust was falling off in large clumps.''

Pettine was also impressed with Young's 6-5 height, saying "that's what they're supposed to look like.''

Young said Tuesday he's motivated to keep his career alive.

"The fire is lit always,'' he said. "One thing a lot of people don’t know, I love this game so much. I do a lot of different things, the Play 60 football teams I have in Houston, I just love being around the game, teaching the next generation. …I’m just happy to be a part of the game.''

Young said he'll play whatever role the coaches ask him to, including mentoring a young quarterback.

"Just one day at a time,'' he said. "I'm here to support Brian and the rest of the guys, Trick Shot (Alex Tanney). Me and Thigpen we’ve played together, so we have some good history together. It’s just trying to be a leader for the rest of the guys, the teammates, letting them know we’re all out here competing, not just at the quarterback position but each position. I just want to continue to let everybody know it’s not about No. 1 and things like that. You can see the direction that the team is going. …I’ll be happy to be here and do anything I can to help it get to that winning side of the ball.''

Young (6-5, 232) was originally the No. 3 overall pick of the Titans in 2006 and earned NFL Rookie of the Year honors. He spent five years with the Titans, earning Pro Bowl honors twice and going 30-17 before being released in 2011.

He signed with the Eagles in 2011, and made instant headlines by dubbing the Eagles the Dream Team that year. The club ultimately finished 8-8 and Young went 1-2, throwing one touchdown and four interceptions in his final game with the Eagles.

They were his last meaningful snaps in an NFL game. Young spent time with the Bills in 2012 and Packers in 2013 in their off seasons, but never played.

Browns general manager Ray Farmer knows Thigpen well from their three seasons together in Kansas City from 2007-2009. Originally a seventh-round pick of the Vikings in 2007, he was waived at the end of camp that year and immediately signed with the Chiefs.

In 2008, he started 11 games for Kansas City, going 1-10. He was traded to the Dolphins in 2009 and spent two seasons there, going 0-1. He spent 2011-12 with the Bills, but didn't play.

“It’s a great opportunity,'' Thigpen said Tuesday. "I’m just excited about it. That’s what you trained for all of last season. Unfortunately, nothing happened last year. I had a couple of workouts. I was going to at least give it two years being out of ball before I retire and then going into this, I was going to train all the way up until August. But right now, this opportunity is presenting itself. It’s a great opportunity. I’m looking forward to it, and I’m just going to try to take advantage of it and get in here and learn the playbook as fast as I can and learn what I have to do in each minicamp and during practice. The biggest thing is learning the terminology. You can run a curl one way but you can call it was many ways as you want to.â€

Thigpen (6-1, 216) admitted it was frustrating sitting out of football last year

"You’ve got to be a professional and I think for myself playing for six years you kind of see the whole process the way it is,'' Thigpen said. "I knew that in the drop of a hat, somebody called me I had to be ready to go and had to be in shape. That’s what I’ve been training all offseason for is this opportunity so now that it’s presented itself I want to definitely take advantage of it.â€
