Tom Herman Update

A well connected media member of both the college and NFL landscape is reporting that the Tom Herman to Texas deal is "all but official." I will hold my judgment until I see other sources say the same thing, but it's still interesting regardless. Thoughts?

Backs up what I posted several weeks ago after a lengthy convo with Andy Staples. Ironically, when the Herman rumors started to pick up steam is when his Houston team started its funk. Are the two related? Likely.

I think it's highly possible. Hard to build momentum when you know your coach is gone after the season and your play is a big factor.

There's one game left on the schedule that would be the deepest of all craters if we lost it. Surely there's no way we lose that game, right? We're not that bad, right?

I don't think this team can play any worse than it is now. We are quite capable of losing to anybody.

I said the same about UH not looking right since Herman job rumors started in another thread over the weekend. Some were saying it was an indictment on his coaching ability but I think it's just been tough for the players to muster the same attitude while feeling like their coach is a goner (same can be said for UT really...).

I guess my main question here is how can it be "all but official" if Strong hasn't been fired. I understand that backroom discussions happen all the time but if this is really true, doesn't it become an issue to agree to terms with another coach while you already have a coach under contract? Or might there already be an agreement in place with Strong to move on?

Checking the timeline on this "report" and it did come out after Mike Perrin and Charlie had a meeting this morning. Could be just coincidence.

I don't think that it is all too uncommon in situations like this that negotiating begins with the agent.  Not Perrin but "his unofficial representatives?"

If you look at Charlie Strong's contract

Now look at Tom Herman's

The two are not very different. In fact, most coaching contracts are quite similar - base pay; two cars; use of an airplane; country club membership; game tickets; bonuses for grades, bowl games, etc.

The big issue is the amount the university decides to allot for assistant coaches. That determines what staff a new coach can either hire or bring with him.

Herman's contract would take about 15 minutes to work out. If the assistant coach salary pool was agreed upon and certain things (such as whether Applewhite was coming with him) were agreed upon, you could have a deal in principle very easily. I would not be surprised in the least if, because of the UT Houston initiative, Fenves and Khator were communicating about UT's interest in Herman. If Texas did want to hire Herman away, U of H would be given every consideration to make sure they were able to plan accordingly.

Also, both contracts were on HKM's server. They may have been the attorneys who did both contracts.
