Herman mentioned it in the postgame press conference at the Cotton Bowl, and again at his Monday media availability. Thought it warranted sharing (the play).
It wasn’t a passing bomb for a TD, or a trick play, but rather a 3rd & long that Texas didn’t convert on the down.
Here is what Herman had to say about the play:
“I think the biggest thing -- I don't know if I mentioned it in the postgame. I knew it on the field it was a big play, but I think third and 20 on your first drive of the second half and throw a tunnel screen just trying to add yards on to your punt, and L.J. Humphrey got stopped. I think we counted, like, 14 yards shy or the first contact was 14 yards shy of the first down and him and the rest of his teammates, I mean, just willed him to within 2 yards, made the decision to go for it on fourth down, pretty easy after seeing that effort, energy, attitude, culture.”
I also wanted to add that over the course of the season, Tom Herman is starting to make “sense” if that makes sense...
His philosophy and strategy as a coach is starting to resonate with his players and it is resulting in wins.
Halfway through the season, Texas is one game away from being bowl eligible. For the last several years, that designation depended on the outcome of Week 12.
There is still half a season to play, but Herman deserves credit for what the team has done thus far in 2018. He has them working hard week after week to put their best on the field, regardless of opponent.
Still 6 games left and plenty of opportunity for the team to stumble, but it’s impressive to see how this team has fought back after losing to Maryland.
