Thoughts on Michigan

1-Michigan wins games by being a smart team. They don't turn the ball over, they rebound and move the ball on the offensive end. With that said, they are very similar to OU in some regards. With McGary injured Michigan really doesn't have an inside game. Michigan is primarily a guard oriented team that uses their athleticism on the outside and is very much a jump shooting team. IMO Texas needs to hedge the entire game. Force Michigan to drive. If that means giving up a few easy baskets so be it. Michigan is most comfortable shooting outside.

2-Ridley must get touches. I'm talking a touch every single possession. Michigan literally does not have a guy that can contain him. They have a bunch of power forwards that are about Holmes size if not smaller. Michigan will get torched if they don't double down on Ridley. Getting Ridley the ball will open up the entire game for everyone.

3-IMO this game comes down to containing Stauskas and Robinson. Their offense is centered around these two guys. Texas doesn't have to stop these guys, just contain them. If I'm Barnes I'm making someone else beat me, and would even think about running some double teams at these guys.

4-IMO Lammert should start this game. First, he would give Texas extra length on the perimeter to guard Michigan's jump shooters. Second, it would create all types of mismatches in Texas favor on the offensive end. Lammert can stretch the floor but also use his size. Texas needs to go big and make this a big boy game instead of a guard game.

5-Crashing the boards will be critical. Michigan is small. They can't stop Ridley, Ibeh, Holmes and Lammert from getting some boards. Texas can dominate the boards if they are aggressive and attack the glass.

6-Getting the ball inside is the most important aspect of this game. Michigan can't contain our bigs because of lack of size. If Texas can get their bigs in early foul trouble, Michigan will be in a world of hurt. Texas needs to be prepared for a lot of zone though, because I think Michigan is almost going to be force to play zone the entire game due to size mismatches down low.

IMO Michigan is the better team. But there are so many mismatches in Texas favor for this individual game.

Our D needs to be on point. They move the ball so well with screens.
Yep. Their ball movement is a thing of beauty too. This is a game where staying in your zone/lane is critical even in man to man defense. If you get caught out of position, Michigan will torch you. Michigan will hit some jumpers. Texas just needs to contest and prevent easy looks from the outside.

Overall a very interesting matchup. Besides Texas, I follow Michigan and UCLA basketball. Michigan's guards are more finesse than tough. If we can play tough defense and throw them off rhythm, we can definitely hang.

Give Walker more minutes and Felix less. We had a nice run going with Walker and then I believe Barnes made a substitution. Other than being a sophomore, I don't know why Felix played as much down the stretch as he did. He did have a great ball-slap to Ridley with 1 sec to go.

I think Holmes needs to step up as well. He was pretty sloppy with about 10 min to go.

Ibeh seems to get 1 foul/min.

What do you guys think on our guard play? I think athletically, Taylor, Holland and Walker can run with Michigan.

Oh definitely, athletically, our guards can definitely hang. The key is play pressure defense and move well with their screen play. We need to "rough" their guards and throw them off their game.

We need another good shooting night like last night.

Like utisdabomb12 said before, they'll most likely double Ridley/play zone, not good for our high/low game, so our guards need to step up and make baskets from the outside.

thanks for the helpful analysis. crashing the boards is what we do best.

Did you guys (SFlonghorngirl, utisdabomb12) play b-ball? It's sad to say, but my 17-yr old daughter has more basketball IQ than me...she has played 5 yrs of club basketball, though. I was a beast on 6-ft and under Intramurals back in the day!

Yup! Played basketball since I was 5 and was quite good until I blew out my knees. Won a couple of co-ed intramural basketball championships.

Nice, well except the knee part. Injuries are my biggest worries with my daughter, except it's her back. She's finally getting some good looks from universities, so it's exciting.
