Kid in my area gets offered by school last summer. 

Kid commits to school in June. Other colleges stopped recruiting him because he kept telling them his commitment to school he committed to was strong.

Kid's high school coach found out in December that school pulled his offer. 

Explanation from college coach - " We found a kid that's closer that was rated higher."

High school coach said they weren't going to tell him till this month. Now kid/high school is scrambling.

From what I understand, this is a common occurrence.  Some schools do this more often than others.  Not the right thing to do, as some kids and their families are making long-term decisions based on where their kid is going to go to college.

taking this at face value and assuming there's not something else in play (grades, character issues), yeah, it sucks. and i'd have to think this college coach's rep with HS coaches/kids going forward won't be very good.

but it also sux when kids 'commit' and flip just before NSD. what the hell is a commitment anyway?

I can understand it happening i guess at the end of the day it is a business.  What i think is wrong is not telling the kid and giving him as much time as possible to land somewhere else.

I'm guessing the coach was trying to keep him for an insurance policy.  Bad karma.

Mike Leach did this to a DeSoto kid just last year. Coach Mathis, in turn, banned Wazzu from the DeSoto campus. I can't blame him.

The coach just texted me..... The school that didn't want him wants to talk to him tonight.

Went through this with a close friends son. They too ceased all communication with other schools . I told them that was a mistake. I even encouraged them to reach out to other schools that he was interested in. But do it casually, not to look like he was shopping himself.

Sure enough the day before signing day the head coach called him and told him they were full but they were offering him preferred walk on position. Yup. They did that.

One of the reasons I am all for early signing.  It makes both parties put their feet into the fire.  It will, also, eliminate trap dooring by schools like Bama.

It will cause the schools to be a lot more judicious about their offers and will cause the kids to have the same cautions about holding early commitments as insurance until they find a school they like better.  Mack or Burt, anyone?

Heard Leach also tried to put this kid in a lawnmower shed. Seriously though, classless move towards kids trying to better themselves. Some coaches could care less about anybody except themselves. D bags.
