I am asking seriously. Just curious - I thought that the plan was to swing for the fences... maybe that is swinging for the fences...

I would be afraid of Sumlin vs Strong recruiting in these parts. Sumlin has been in Tx and OK since 2001. Strong in a living room vs Sumlin to get a 5 star - well, that would be interesting...

Start losing soon, and a death spiral may occur that would be devastating. That would be my concern.

Saban or Harbaugh would have caused many a sleepless nights for the opponents of UT.

People are looking at this the wrong way. There are a lot of people sayi g coaches turned us down. My opinion of this is that it is just coach speak. I said in another thread that is should actually be a coachi g search vs hiring a big name. You had to look for a person that fits you institution not change your institution to fit the person. Maybe Strong blew the interview out of the water and he is the right guy in Patterson's mind. The "I'm happy to be the coach at...." Is just a way to say UT decided to hire someone else.

Again, I apologize to anyone upset with me. I feel really bad but know that I posted what I was hearing. Saban gave us an unexpected no. That sucks. I'm as disappointed as you are.
But Charlie Strong may prove to be a genius hire. We won't know until we get down the road a little. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until then.

What made Fisher, Malzahn or Briles tier 1 coaches? Serious question

We were turned down by multiple guys inexplicably.......

Were we? This is the story on ESPN already. But is it true?

Did Patterson even approach John Harbaugh?

Did he ever interview Jimbo Fisher? How could he before the bowl game?

What about Malzahn and/or Meyer? Does not appear so.

He could have if he had shown more patience. At this point, why not wait until Tuesday for Fisher?

The only confirmed interviews were Franklin and Strong. Possibly Mora, Jr.

Mora and Franklin did not turn us down as they were never offered.

To me, the failure to explore all of these options, if true, is a breach by Patterson. It's a failure to fully perform his duties of due diligence. Patterson is taking a huge risk here. It's stunning really. I doubt he gets a second chance if this one blows up.

if anybody is upset with you or any other poster passing on what they heard, eff-em. I try and treat the internet as something I'd here in a sports bar or around the office water cooler. interesting, but it ain't under oath.
as for being disappointed it isn't saban...not me. I've said repeatedly I want the NEXT saban. strong has as good a chance as any.

I am not saying I agree with it. Strong is a huge risk. If ti does not work out Patterson will be gone too.

I understand Friday is a good news night for bad news. I want to support Strong but the crazy rumors of Saban, Harbaugh, and Fisher make this a huge let down. I'm embarrassed that I read so many threads and honestly bought in to some exciting hires. Strong may be fine in the end, but it seems like we made a boring choice and not the level I would expect. Is this 100% over and done with? I feel like I was going to dance with George Clooney and Screech from saved by the bell showed up instead. It's a downer, honestly.

When did you change your position? You said earlier it had never happened. No biggie, just noticed the change.

What? I never said that we didn't talk to him in the spring. I was very cautiously optimistic before black friday that there could be some truth to the rumors. They weren't and all subsequent stories regarding Saban were just getting silly. The guy said no to us in the spring and hasn't spoken with us since. It just made us look extremely desperate and sad.

No doubt. And make sure that you iterate that it's the sources belief and not your own. Kinda makes it look like you are both people.
