Texas vs Kansas - Game 2 (recap added)

Don't know what the record for extra inning games in a Texas season is but I'm quite certain the 'Horns passed it in week 3.

Texas loses another heartbreaker

FINAL: Kansas 5 – Texas 4

After winning a 14-inning marathon on Friday night, Texas appeared headed for another long night with the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday. But Connor McKay ripped a solo, two-out homerun in the bottom of the ninth frame to boost KU to a walkoff win, 5-4.

Centerfielder Zane Gurwitz got the Horns off to a hot start when he cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the top of the second inning. Making his first collegiate start, Ty Culbreth saw his cushion evaporate quickly, as Kansas struck for a pair in the home half of the second. The Jayhawks then knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of an RBI double by Dakota Smith.

The Longhorns didn’t waste much time before Bret Boswell put the team back in front with an RBI groundout that scored Michael Cantu. But Kansas, again, answered quickly, scoring an unearned run on an infield single in the home half of the seventh. The game stayed tied at 4 runs each until McKay’s fireworks at the end of the game.

Texas hitters stayed patient at the plate, drawing six walks, including two free passes each drawn by Tres Barrera and Kacy Clemens. Ultimately though, the Longhorns were undone by leaving nine runners on base with the majority in scoring position. Failing to get timely hits continues to plague the Longhorns’ lineup.

Connor Mayes, entering in relief of Kyle Johnston took the loss and fell to 1-3. Mayes pitched solidly but allowed the game-winner off McKay’s bat in the bottom of the ninth.

Texas and Kansas will play the rubber match of the three-game set at 1:00PM on Sunday.
