Ehlinger out for the season
X-rays of injured thumb change minds of Westlake coach, QB

Texas pledge and Austin Westlake quarterback Sam Ehlinger’s season is over. Ehlinger injured his thumb in the first quarter of Friday night’s much heralded clash with Lake Travis, which Travis won 49-7. Westlake head coach Todd Dodge made the announcement Monday.

Ehlinger was hurt on a play where he was scrambling in and out of the pocket on a play at Cavalier Stadium. His thumb was hurt in a collision and he later wrapped it in ice, expecting to return this week. However, x-rays were performed over the weekend which changed those plans.

Whats worse for the Chaps is that second string QB Matt Gense was knocked out for the season with a broken collar bone during the game on Sept. 3 against Hays. Sophomore Taylor Anderson came in for Ehlinger Friday night.

Its an unfortunate ending to a stellar high school career for Ehlinger.

The Woodlands making believers

Don’t look now, but The Woodlands is making some serious noise in Class 6A. Friday night, they beat unbeaten Beaumont West Brook by a lopsided 72-7 score.

The Woodlands at 6-0 are one of four remaining unbeaten teams in the Class 6A state rankings. Top ranked Allen, No. 2 DeSoto, No. 8 San Angelo Central are the other teams with unblemished records so far.

Klein Collins rising

Keep an eye on Klein Collins. The Tigers (4-1) knocked off Klein Oak Friday night 42-7. After falling behind 7-0 early in the first quarter, the Tiger scored four straight touchdowns in the first half to take over the game.

Collins’ defense has been impressive, holding Oak’s offense to just 213 yards. Oak was averaging 43 points per game going into their tilt with Collins. Collins’ only loss this year was a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to powerful Katy, 50-49 earlier this season.

TD added, then taken away from New Caney

When New Caney beat Splendora on Thursday night, it looked like the Eagles had won 37-29.

After the teams had left the field, officials determined that a New Caney touchdown as time expired should have counted, so the score briefly was changed to 43-29.

Then, on Friday, the UIL ruled that the score couldn't be changed after both teams had already left the field, so the score was switched back to 37-29.

On the last play of the game, Splendora's quarterback threw up a pass in desperation. One of his offensive linemen caught the pass, then fumbled it away.

New Caney freshman Dwight McGlouthern scooped up the loose ball and ran it into the end zone.

Initially, officials didn't count the touchdown, because of a penalty for illegal touching by the lineman, who isn't allowed to catch a forward pass. After the teams had left the field, officials realized New Caney should have had the option of declining the penalty and taking the defensive score.

Obviously, New Caney won the game either way, but multiple team district tiebreakers can be decided by point differential, which is where the ruling could come back to bite the Eagles.

Sorry for the lack of scores this evening. I woke up and began passing a gall stone today so I've been dealing with that all day. I'll be fine for Friday I believe. Going back to bed now.

I am told its the closest thing to childbirth a man will ever know. Yes, it sucks.

This was my third stone in the last five years.

From Thursday night . . .

Damn my typo I meant to say was my thoughts exactly UTK . I'm telling you it's the water

80 points against a #5 ranked team? What the hell is up with that?

Agree, 80 points is ridiculous. The AP tends to show Yoe some patience as the Yoemen have a reputation of being there at the end.

They got drilled by China Spring, a higher classification school who is ranked, 63-13

They did beat #7 Franklin 42-38.

But as you can see, they're giving up a ton of points. Still, they'll have no problem making the playoffs. They have Academy and Troy left on their schedule. I don't think they'll make a deep run this time though.
