Hornsports is getting you prepped for the Spring Game by counting down the days until kickoff with a daily topic for discussion. Here's the fifth installment in the series...
What will the offensive line look like?
I have always held fast to the belief that the most important unit on a football team is the offensive line. The success of both the running and passing game begins with how well an offensive line blocks. Unfortunately for Texas, it has been a long time since the offensive line has played at a championship level.
This year, Texas brings in an offensive line coach, Joe Wickline, that many people call the best in the business. Wickline has built a reputation of taking lesser known prospects and developing them into solid, and sometimes great, players. Now at Texas, Wickline has the task of taking some of the highly rated prospects recruited by the former staff and turning them into a formidable unit.
This season, the Longhorns break in an almost completely new starting five. With the exception of Dom Espinosa, there will be four new starters. The starters (and depth) at Tackle are of particular concern. For the quarterback's sake, Wickline needs to get the most out of Kent Perkins, Camrhon Hughes, Kennedy Estelle and Desmond Harrison. Developing that group also allows a solid group of players that are better suited to playing on the interior of the OL to flourish at their more natural positions. Players like Rami Hammad and Jake Raulerson are athletic enough to play outside, but if the 4 Tackles above can dominate it keeps those two on the interior.
On Saturday, we will get to see a new set of players as well as an updated blocking scheme that many, including our own Coleman Feeley says is easier to learn and should help cut down on errors.
