Tampa judge has harsh words for USF coach Charlie Strong

A Tampa judge had some strong words for new USF football coach Charlie Strong during a hearing for LaDarrius Jackson, a defensive end on the team accused of sexual battery Wednesday morning.

Jackson, 22, was arrested Monday and charged with sexual battery and false imprisonment of a woman who was reportedly an acquaintance. The junior from Alabama was making his first court appearance in the case.

"I graduated from USF, I'm an alumni, graduated from USF in 1989, long before there was a football team," Judge Margaret Taylor said to Jackson, according to WTSP. “And while USF may not be the top-ranked school in the nation, I was never ashamed of being an alum until now.

“Let's just say that my USF diploma is not proudly hanging in my office right now.â€

Taylor then addressed Strong, who was hired by the school in December to replace Willie Taggart.

"And, I have a message for your coach, as well. Coach Strong, if you are listening, in the last couple of months there have been two arrests of your players for very violent felonies,†Taylor said. “This court, and I'm sure I'm not alone, questions whether you have control over your players. It's fairly clear you do not have control of them off the field, and I guess only time will tell whether you have control over them on the field.

"I would implore you to think long and hard about whether being head coach at USF is a good fit for you before any other members of this community have to suffer at the hands of one of your players.â€

Jackson, who was recruited by Taggart’s staff, is the second USF player to have a run-in with the law in recent months. Hassan Childs, a defensive back and Kissimmee Osceola High graduate, was charged with aggravated assault and possession of marijuana in March during a road rage incident. He was dismissed from the team.

Jackson also has been removed from team activities.

Strong responded to the judge’s comments in a statement released by USF.

“In the short time I have been here, our program has been built on character, discipline and family,†Strong said in the statement. “We have wonderful young men in the USF football program who choose to do the right thing every day. We are dedicated to recruiting young men of high character, and to consistently developing them with structure and frequent education regarding appropriate conduct and behavior, on and off the playing field,†Strong said.

“While I am shocked and saddened at the recent arrest of a member of our team, I am disappointed that the actions of two players over the last two months have harmed the reputation of our program, of our wonderful university and of my character. We have high expectations of our coaches, staff and student-athletes and we hold accountable those who act contrary to our values.â€

She was out of line with this IMO. Charlie has been in Tampa for five minutes and didn't even recruit the players in question.

A lot of things can be said about Charlie, but he hasn't ever tolerated that kind of stuff. He has dismissed guys for less.

Yea, if I had been Charlie, my statement would have been pretty blunt and the judge would not have liked what I had to say. Bottom line, she's a dumbass.

That a judge would be this myopic is alarming, but then again there seems to be a lot of that going on in this country right now.

I agree with all the above, but in light of all the permissiveness going on in college football (Briles, Paterno, Stoops, etc.), her reaction is understandable. She just went too far by including Charlie in her wrath.

Apparently, the judge was emotionally swayed by the victim's testimony . She used her platform as a judge to publicly vent her anger, and poor Charlie, once again, was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I find the idea that football coaches should keep tabs on players 24/7 like nannies laughable.

IMO, they're only culpable if they keep the felons around after they're proven guilty. Agree with Daniel and others - this judge was out of line with her comments. Why should anyone give a damn if she's "ashamed of her USF diploma"?
