Kent is one of those pitchers that has steadily progressed in his time at A&M. He redshirted and was on and off his redshirt freshman year. In fact, I remember he made his first major appearance against then #1 North Carolina in the Minute Maid Classic in 2013 and got destroyed by that team. He put together some decent performances out of the pen in SEC play, but wasn't every truly dominant. I'm not sure we ever expected him to be a big-time weekend starter.
He has stepped up in the 2nd half of the season, and the confidence has been noticeable since he outdueled Carson Fulmer in the SEC tournament. He works the corners with breaking balls and doesn't walk a lot of batters. Smart kid who Childress lets manage the game and make his own pitches. He is similar in style to a Greg Maddux in that he doesn't rely on blowing his fastball by the batter. I would say without a doubt Kent is our best pitcher at the moment. The Friday night guy, Grayson Long, is a high strikeout guy but he runs the pitch count up high quickly and gives away too many free bases. I think our coaches have told him to pitch more towards contact since the SEC tourney and that has produced mixed results.
I expect Monday's starter will be the big lefty from Lufkin, Tyler Stubblefield. He came back from an ACL tear before the season started in the SEC tourney and we have steadily worked him into more innings in the short time since his comeback. He pitched a gem against Cal last Sunday and has been pretty clutch for us in tournament games. He was the pitcher that pitched the complete game in the Houston Regional last year against Texas to force the winner-take-all game. Tyler would have likely been the Friday night starter if not for the injury and he has good stuff. He struggled through conference play in 2014 so I wouldn't call him an ace. He walks quite a few batters and is aggressive with his fastball, but when he is on, he is tough to string together hits on.
