It is being reported in several places that Tulsa offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert has been offered and accepted the offensive coordinator position at Texas. 247's Bobby Burton had the initial report.

Texas interviewed Cal's Tony Franklin earlier today, but I was told yesterday that Gilbert and Texas was a done deal and just needed to wait for it officially go down.

As of right now the only for assistant to join Gilbert would be Tulsa's Co-OC and offensive line coach Mike Mattox. The rest of the staff is undetermined at this time.

I believe Bobby and it's a done deal but a reporter with the Tulsa World newspaper, or whatever it's called, and footballscoop.com are saying it's not true. I think they we just behind.

So quotes from both the first coach and recruit I asked about "how they feel about the new OC hire" is...

"Don't really know anything about him"

lol.

Still gathering quotes from coaches and players now

Recruit quote

"personally I think it will be good for them it will take some getting used too like anything but they will adjust. They definitely shocked doubters with the W against Baylor "

The hire, along with beating Baylor -- and both squads were riddled with key injuries -- they had almost no quarterback, but we had almost no experience on defense -- with all that, prospective recruits should see Texas in a new light.

Quote from Jalen Mayden 4* QB

"Man I'm excited!!!! [i can't wait] to see what new game plan he brings to the table with swoopes and heard.... like is he going to choose one or is it going to be like Oklahoma St."

Jalen i think i can speak on behalf of most reasonable people on this board and say we are excited too. For the first time in 2 years we will have at worst a decent OC, THAT is an upgrade.

Watson you will not be missed.

Bobby Burton is saying this morning that Mattox is actually not expected to be coming with Gilbert. And that Gilbert is going after Thomsen from ASU.

Mike Spradlin (Temple HS HC) is another name being bounced around. Again, per BB at 247.

How do you guys feel about the head ball coach of Temple or Spradlin of ASU possibly coming over? I have to admit.. I know little about each?

Spradlin is an awesome coach. Being from Belton, and Temple being our rival, it's hard to admit it but he has definently changed Temple. Even better man.

Help this Baseball person on this OC?

One, I don't understand why you would go get someone from Tulsa?

Two, sounds like a lot of the recruits don't know who he is?

Three, Is there excitement from the current team?

I just can't wrap my brain around this..

Not that anybody owes me an explanation, and I am asking this honestly... Besides the complete shit show that Watson and Norvell are as play callers, why are we so excited about Gilbert? Ive read his bio several times and what he's done, and none of it jumped out at me as exciting. I am 1000% down with trying out anybody that is not named Watson or Norvell but IMHO this is a bit underwhelming... Strong has $1M to spend on an OC and we pick up what seems to be a relatively inexperienced guy from a non power 5 school that doesn't even call the plays? Again, Im not trying to incite an argument... Merely looking for clarity.

Apparently, we aspire to be as good as Baylor these days. It is what it is.

"Bigger" coaching names with more OC experience probably wouldn't agree to come to UT knowing that Strong is on a short leash.

The fact of the matter is that most of the best offenses in College football are run by a HC.  We tried to hire one of the few exceptions by offering Sonny Cumbie at TCU.

We also were looking for a OC that runs a run-based spread and preferably had ties to this state.

Top Offenses in College Football:

Bowling Green - HC Dino Babers runs offense

Baylor - Art Briles

Texas Tech - Kliffy

TCU - Sonny & Doug

Southern Mississippi

Western Kentucky

Cincy

Clemson

Oregon

Oklahoma - Lincoln Riley is OC

Tulsa had the 16th ranked offense in College Football.

When Mike Spradlin left UH (and Art Briles) he hired Sterlin Gilbert as his OC to install and run the Briles offense.

When Dino Babers left Baylor he hired Gilbert to install and run the Briles offense at EIU.

When Babers left EIU to go to Bowling Green he brought Gilbert with him to install and help run the Briles offense.

When Phil Montgomery finally left Baylor to become HC at Tulsa he hired Gilbert to install and help run the Briles offense.

When Phil Montgomery was asked (when he was an OC at Baylor) who should run this offense if anything ever happened to him - he said "Sterlin Gilbert, that guy is a stud".

Sterlin Gilbert isn't a big name to the general public, or even recruits, but among the people who coach the offense we are looking to run - he's a star.

People piss & moan that we didn't try and hire Lincoln Riley, and we watched as he went to Oklahoma and became Assistant Coach of the year.  Sterlin Gilbert is Lincoln Riley three years ago.  Gilbert, along with Montgomery, took a 2-10 team that finished 78th in the country in offense in 2014 and turned them into the 16th best offense in the country in 2015.

'Offensively' - you're damn right we do.
