Silent Commitment - Poona Ford

YESSSSSSS!! This kid is exactly what we need to help us get to the playoffs. I hope this is true.
Woah, that is going to take some getting used too.

It will not be long before it extends to 8 teams then every FBS conference champion and 5 WC's. At 16 teams, is going to make more money than March Madness.
That has been my contention for years

This will turn into a great thing and eventually the bowls will dissapear or will turn into something like the NIT , another playoff system for the non qualifiers

I went back. . .in the BcS era there was only one year where the BcS would have had a legit problem with a 5th team qualifying if you used winning the conference and head to head as qualifying issues. . .

And frankly the computers were more accurate than the humans. . .wish they had kept them even if just for reference . ..

The logistics of a 16 team playoff simply will not work. . .unless you use the 1st weekend in Dec as round 1 with conference title games. . . the higher ranked team can either host the game or it can be held at a neutral location ....this would require teams like ND and BYU to join conferences (which would work). . .the 1st round losers would not be eligible for "non-playoff" bowl games.. .call me old fashion but don't want to see the bowl system destroyed. ..

The interesting unintended consequences of this. . .the minor bowls would have even better matchups as more quality teams become available. ..

It's coming anyway but this would be the next step to the super conferences where you have 4 conferences of 16-20 teams each. . .B1G, Pac, SEC and some merger of BigXII/ACC. . . .

You play the conference title games 1st weekend in Dec then the kids have time for finals. .

Use the top remaining bowls for playoffs in a similar rotation to the current title game with bowls like Peach, Capitol One, Fiesta, Orange making up the 4 locations for the quarter finals. . .these bowls could be slotted one per time zone with a game Friday night and a Sat triple header. . .as most colleges are off between fall and spring for 30 days . . .at worst the title game only impacts the 1st week of classes. . .

Semi Finals work as the current playoffs do with a rotation of venues and the prior year's title game drops back to host a quarter final game the following year then 2 years in the semi final rotation .. .

You offer some interesting comments, but I will start with your supposition that there will be 4 super-conferences with 16-20 teams each. Such a system would, at most, allow for 80 teams to have any shot at a title. What happens to the other 45 FBS teams? If you lock them out of a chance at the title, you instantly have a serious legal challenge on anti-trust grounds. If you remember, the changes in the BCS system that allowed for easier non-AQ participation was a result of Orin Hatch threatening federal intervention when Utah was still non-AQ and he felt Utah didn't have an equal shot at the title as did any of the major conference schools.

As far as the entire ides of "super-conferences" is concerned, a 16 team playoff system requires the top two teams to play four playoff games. Add in 12 regular season games and a conference championship and you have a 17 game schedule that doesn't allow time for finals or time off with family for the holidays. The kids put in even more work so the schools can make even more money and we still claim its all about the kids. A 17 game schedule with money flowing into schools will demand changes in compensation rules for athletes. Also, if you lock out the 45 FBS non-super-conference schools from the money of the playoffs, the legal challenges become more significant. If you include them in the playoff money, you give more schools a financial incentive to move up to FBS. (My personal solution to this problem is a relegation system, but that wreaks havoc on scheduling and travel issues for schools as programs that get relegated will drop out of conferences and the programs moving up to replace them are not guaranteed to be geographically convenient for the other teams in the conference. You could have an ACC team get relegated and replaced with Hawaii).

Finally, why is a 16 or 20 team "super-conference" the structure of choice moving forward? A 16 team playoff in a 20 team super-conference would require 17 games total for the champion. If you cut this back to 15 games, you do so by eliminating 2 of 3 OOC games, leaving most schools with one OOC game. Also, under such a scenario, cutting two OOC games means those 64 teams not qualifying for the playoffs with only a 10 game schedule, which means most schools make less money. Also, as the SEC is finding out, a 16 team, two division conference means you play most non-division teams once every six years at most and once every 12 years at home. Why are such teams considering themselves in the same conference if they only play almost half the teams in the conference once every six years? It would make more sense that conferences be reduced in size back to 8 team (or 9 teams) where a round-robin schedules allows for a true conference champion (with all teams having an 11 or 12 game schedule), allow round one of the playoffs to be a playoff between conference champions and non-qualifying teams go into an NIT-style bowl system.

We all expect some sort of realignment to happen, the only question is what will set it off. In a playoff system, it makes much more sense (if you want rivalry games) to have smaller conferences and conference champions playing as round one of the playoffs because it gives a reason for teams to toughen up with tougher OOC games and doesn't penalize any one who loses an OOC game.

You see I have no problem with the bowl system going away. The ratings are by and large abysmal except for the biggest of games, they are poorly attended and no one really cares

A 16 team and eventually 24 team playoff would creat huge interest, huge ratings, sold out games etc

It isnt that much of a problem logistically

First round would be first weekend in Dec and you would be down to 8 teams ( assuming a 16 team playoff) That can easily be managed after exams and would only require 3 more weekends to finish.

Hey if he wants to pick Purdue over Texas, be my guest, but I would love to see him in burnt orange next year

I think the coaches are going to do a in home with him this week. Hopefully they will lock him up.

247 sez Poona Ford will announce on NSD on ESPNU.

This could be a good thing.

Or not.

Poona has not y et had a chance to visit Austin, right? Maybe I missed something, but I thought the weather canceled his plans. I just don't see him choosing Texas never having been (though I could be wrong about his not coming to Austin--can't keep track).

247 --

"I just spoke with four-star defensive tackle Poona Ford who told me he had a great visit this weekend and now the Horns are standing out in a good way. "It was really good," said Ford. "I had a lot of fun. You could say that Texas is definitely the favorite right now."
