Which School Landed the Best Recruiting Class at Each Position?





SECONDARY: TEXAS


Longhorns head coach Tom Herman and his staff assembled the No. 3 class in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite, and five of the six top-ranked prospects in that class, including the top four, are classified as defensive backs: five-star Steele (Tex.) High safety Caden Sterns, five-star Angleton (Tex.) High safety B.J. Foster, four-star Heights (Tex.) High cornerback Jalen Green and four-star Arp (Tex.) High safety DeMarvion Overshown. In sum, Texas grabbed three of the six highest ranked safeties and three of the 15 highest ranked cornerbacks in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports Composite.

The Longhorns will need to make progress on the other side of the ball, after ranking 99th in Football Outsiders S&P+ metric in 2017, to reenter college football’s elite tier, but short of cloning Gary Patterson, stockpiling elite cover men may be one of the only ways to counter the high-octane offenses rattling Big 12 scoreboards, most notably the one that has made rival Oklahoma the conference’s premier team in the College Football Playoff era.


SPECIALISTS: TEXAS


In 2017, Michael Dickson won his second Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year award, led the conference in averaging punting distance for the second consecutive season and earned the Ray Guy Award given to the nation’s best punter. The Longhorns did about as well as they could have finding a replacement for Dickson, who chose to forgo his senior season in favor of entering the draft, by signing Dickson’s cousin, Ryan Bujcevski. Like Dickson, Bujcevski hails from Australia, and the former Australian Rules football player is ranked the No. 2 punter in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports Composite.

University of Texas tackles declining attendance at Longhorn football games




In Tom Herman’s first season as head coach of the University of Texas football team, fewer of the burnt orange faithful turned out for home games than they did during Charlie Strong’s final season.

New figures from the NCAA show attendance at the six games played in 2017 at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium dipped by a little over 5 percent versus the six home games in 2016. In light of that drop-off, UT’s new athletics director promises a “much more dynamic and energetic environment” in and around DKR next year.

In 2016, Strong’s last season as UT’s head coach, the Longhorns notched a losing record of 5-7 and didn’t entertain the possibility of heading to a bowl game. Despite a losing record, Longhorn football games in Austin games hooked 587,283 fans, with average attendance of 97,881 per game. That season, UT sat in eighth place among NCAA Division I Football Subdivision (FBS) teams for attendance at home games.

A year later in 2017, Herman’s first season leading the Horns, the team ended with a 6-6 record and beat the University of Missouri in the Texas Bowl. During the season, Longhorn home games drew a total of 556,667 fans, or an average of 92,778 per game. That one again put UT in eighth place for home game attendance among NCAA Division I FBS teams, suggesting the university isn't the only one tackling a decline in attendance.

Chris Del Conte, the new athletics director at UT, says he and his colleagues are “actively addressing” the attendance slump. “We’ve been looking at the numbers, and we recognize the dip in attendance figures in recent years here. It’s an issue that so many schools across the country are dealing with and one that is a top priority for us,” Del Conte tells CultureMap in a statement.

Del Conte says he and his team are evaluating every aspect of the game-day experience at DKR.

“We have a lot of talented people in the room and are reaching out to all of our constituents — coaches, student-athletes, students, fans, and supporters — to come up with ways to improve,” he says. “I’m excited about the plans we are discussing and really looking forward to the [next] season. We are going to have a much more dynamic and energetic environment in and around our stadium in 2018.”

As noted by Del Conte, the Longhorns are hardly alone in seeing home-game attendance slide in 2017. For example, home-game attendance for Texas A&M football games decreased by 3 percent from 2016 to 2017, according to the NCAA. The Aggies ranked third last year for home-game attendance among major universities. At the University of Oklahoma, home-game attendance inched downward by less than 1 percent. For 2017, the Sooners stood at No. 12 for home-game attendance among top-tier schools.

In UT’s football conference, the Big 12, per-game attendance wilted by a little over 1 percent from 2016 to 2017, according to CBSSports.com. Overall, the fall-off in per-game attendance in 2017 among the 129 NCAA Division I FBS teams was the largest in 34 years and the second largest ever, the website notes.

“This is not surprising to me,” Bill Lutzen, a veteran sports TV programmer, told CBSSports.com. “This issue is with lack of involvement of the college students. They no longer view attending sporting events as part of the university experience.”

It was a good year to be a defensive backs coach in the state of Texas if you were a good enough recruiter to capitalize. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, there were six defensive backs out of Texas ranked in the national Top100. 247Sports ranked three defensive backs within the five-star ranks alone. Washington was the primary recruiter on two of those five stars in CB Jalen Green and S Caden Sterns. He was also the primary recruiter on another four-star cornerback in D'Shawn Jamison and four-star wide receiver Joshua Moore. That group powered Texas' best recruiting class since 2012.

A disconnect between players not buying in, and not playing as much as they wanted, is my take.

 
I quit going three years ago primarily due to the 2,000,000 WATT Gawdzillitron.

The material on the board is distracting and stupid.

It so loud you cannot talk or holler at your comrades near you or at strangers in front of behind you.

It's as if you're not even at a football game but some crazy Hoopla ACL concert of infield of a NASCAR event.

The screen, the scale of the side of a midwestern barn or airport hanger, should be limited to plays and replays with NO FREAKING SOUND that's overly audible while the game is in play. ONLY noticable if one chooses to look over. Make it a CHOICE -- not a damned COMMAND by sheer display.

As it is, the damn thing DOMINATES the entire stadium even before the game begins. It's the damnedest, dumbest idea a football stadium ever conceived.

In lieu of commercials in general, the screen and it's borders should be used to support only UT academics and events and history. Nothing outside the university. Zero commercial use or promotion. Get rid of the borders of graphics. make it plain, pure, elegant and simple. For live action and replay. And, at only a few intervals over the course of the game, promote and honor UT functions, students and history.

The Game Day atmosphere at DKR is atrocious until the Gawdzillitron is solved and limited to a minor support role and not a dominating role as is the case up to now.

Last few times I went I had to wear concert ear plugs but should have brought ear protections suitable for an outdoor range (that I won't fully describe here).

Or maybe it's just me. I'm pissed at loud overhead music in stores, especially Trader Joe's on Great Hills Trail where I have to wear said ear plugs. Whole Foods Gateway can be just as obnoxious.

All such noise and "music" is at the expense of patrons and is an idea only in the heads of those managing said venues. I think it's all aimed at consumption. Years ago the founder and owner of (___ won't say here___) Pizza here in Austin told me that (won't identify by category here, but he did name a category) restaurants play loud music to increase beer sales. Patrons must elevate their voices just to talk to one another. That then elevates their own energies and drives them to keep ordering more beer. So the overhead music is not to please or create atmosphere, but to drive consumption.

I have no clue what the AD thought the Gawdzillitron was aimed at promoting. Maybe that, too, is all about consumption. Certainly not Game Day Atmosphere. Certainly not the pure game of football. Certainly not a classic college game experience. How about revisiting the atmosphere of the Jan 2006 Rose Bowl and having no more than what was evidenced during that game?

Sound levels of this kind purposely generated and produced in a business environment are degrees of ambient encroachment on the lives of those nearby. For such as the Gawdzillitron, ight as well be pouring buckets of ice water over everyone's head. Ala, Ice Bucket Challenge.

I will not go to another DKR game until that damned Blaster is reduced to a support role that never once interferes with fans focusing on the only reason they are there. The game. And their fellow fans.

What we have now is a Television on Steroids running at AC-DC Rock Concert Audio Levels.
