Sark was going to work on short yardage plays. do you all think he was sucessfull?

Guess I am old school but for 1 yard plays I like the QB ( Or sub ) under center. Everyone is shooting the gaps now hitting ball carrer in back field. Hard to lose yardage withQB under center Go with the Bush push.

Thoughts?

Red did a great job running the wildcat today in short yardage. Dude is quick and strong. Wildcat gives the offense an extra blocker which always helps.
Yes he did but was close to losing yardage second time. USC ran a great misdiriction play to score on a walk in.

I like MM under center better than QE, in one sneak situation it looked like the snap came up on Quinn, show the QB's today have very little experience under center, Conventional teaching is that the QB is already in motion when he gets the snap

Malike is both taller and heavier than Ewers. He's Vince Young's size. If he has the collision Ewers had, someone from the other team is going out of the game.

I'm old skool as well and I agree, however, you have to have the pieces to do it... and QE isnt it. 195 pounds on 2x2 stilts (I would say chicken legs but chickens generally have good thighs) doesnt generate power. and, then he generally goes to the left side (B gap) behind an undersized center with a bad leg and a guard (Hayden Conner) that hasnt shown he can move anyone.

Almost all of Red's short yardage success has been outside left guard (D & E gap) and Red runs harder than Ewers. Conner apparently doesnt have the power to move a DL off his position, which you have to do on an inside run (B gap). On a run between the OG and OT, all he has to do is turn or prevent the DL from going outside or kick out block depending on blocking scheme.

Ewers still isnt comfortable taking the under center snap, which is a problem. If he were comfortable under center, he goes up to the line in this situation and makes a call: if if the center and/or OGs are uncovered (no one heads up), then he can signal quick snap to the C to bull rush forward. If they are covered, then change it to RB handoff or pitch. This is something QE is still behind in his development.

I would never use a QB might get hurt. Red with a T (3 backs ) the DT (forgot his name) Helm and Baxter

DT and Helm hit the guard slots and Baxter push Red. To me better than going outside.

agree... but even if a weak lower body QE is under the center and the center & one of the guards are uncovered, a quick snap QB sneak is a guaranteed 1-2yds. He cant do that because that (under center play) is not his game. So, yeah, Red off guard and tackle is the right move, which is why they do so much wildcat. If QE can go under center then handoff/pitch to Red, then follow through with a bootleg move then they can fake to Red, bootleg/pass option later on. This is basic QB play in the NFL and QE is behind the power curve.

There is SO MUCH more they can do. Red passing the ball in the wildcat during the RRR was huge. Not only was it a beautiful pass but now that option is on tape for teams to be concerned about.

The problem with going over the guard, and specifically Conner, is the the guard HAS to move his man back 2-3 yds or you end up with a big pile-up and that's what has been happening. Going behind the guard slanting to the OG-OT gap has been more effective because the guard doesnt have to move his man; just neutralize him (keep him from penetrating)

At this point, I think we're going to see the Red Cat, and for better or worse, rely on it more and more for short yardage situations.

agree... but unless they add more twists & options as teams naturally load the box in short yardage situations. snapping directly to Red reduces those options. A smart DC will pick up on the trends.
