That's what I thought. The reason I ask is we had and instance during a high school game. Are the high school rules different? Most conform to NCAA rules.

Syracuse is beating Virginia 16-0 right now.

Syracuse just had a DT go down with an injury, hanging on to one knee with both hands.

His uniform pants only came down to about an inch above his knee. No knee pads.

It would seem to me that with all the knee injuries all over football each year, we'd find a way to wear some protection there.

Most knee injuries don't seem to be related to contusion from impact, more so the joint hyperextending and ligaments being injured. A pad won't help with that. 

I do know a lot of programs have all of their offensive linemen wear the hard plastic knee braces that prevent the joint from moving too much in any direction. Not sure I've seen much of it at other positions probably because it limits mobility too much and also, the OL is a high risk for getting rolled up on and injuring the knee.
