Supposedly wants this thing done so he doesn't have to do it, one way (keep) or the other (fire).

He doesnt strike me as the kind of guy who has an issue with firing someone.

No one is asking Luck to fire anyone. That is silly to think that that any new AD has any say on whether Brown stays or not.

Isn't this a bit ridiculous? Surely Oliver Luck is acutely aware as per how this season is rapidly unfolding. Not to mention the ramifications as per recruiting, should any profound and yet arbitrary decisions spring forth regarding RETAIN vs FIRE the head coach.

There is no way in the world, that the powers that be at Texas, shall allow for the AD vs Head Coach interviewing process to become a three ring circus..... If so, then I might as well just revert back into a (15 year old) head to the nearest McDonald's, and just place an order for some Ronald McDonald's animal crackers....

I've been skeptical from the start about Luck taking the AD position while other people are doing part of his job and hiring the head coaches. I just can't see him walking into the AD position and being told other people not accountable to the program will decide for him who the new head football coach will be. He won't walk into the position accepting that whenever certain big money types decide to take over parts of the athletic director's job they will do just that. In my mind, no one worthy of the job would agree to that arrangement.

I'm guessing he's seeing the possibility that Mack goes undefeated for the rest of the year and still gets fired, and Luck doesn't want to be the focus of a national media shitstorm for firing Mack in that situation (even though Mack should and will get fired if he doesn't step down)

The fact that Bellmont doesn't have control of the message on the changes happening with the program says a lot. in fact, not a one of us even knows who the spokesman is for the program and people like ourselves are paying more attention to the situation that most fans. We need a new AD, football coach, basketball coach, baseball coach, media relations person, sports information director, etc, etc, etc. Deloss has done a lot for the program, but it needs to be rebuilt in almost every area.

I don't see where he is indicating he doesn't want to hire or fire coaches. Where are you getting that from?
I got it by not paying much attention to the content or context of the post and instead drawing conclusions from the thread title and running with that.

Any guy who has issues with making replacements is unfit to be an AD.

I can't believe Luck or anyone else would express such a view, not unless it was in the form of, I'll withdraw because I think the Mack Brown situation is a lose-lose for the next AD.

Other than that, any new AD wants to make the decisions because then the department is his. Even if Mack stays for another 2 or 3 years, the new AD is going to want to be the one who decides who replaces him, just like he wants to be the one who replaces Barnes. Any AD worth having is going to want to decide when the coaches are replaced and who will get the jobs.

Leaks like this are always interesting because they could mean anything. This one could be out there to light a fire under Luck. It could be out there because it is a way to dismiss Luck, who may not be able to garner the support to get the job.

If he wants an easy job, he can stay at West Vag. The Texas AD position needs a bad ass willing to make some tough decisions.

Mack getting shown the door would cause less of a fuss than Lane Kiffin's firing.

The only things that would really be affected by Mack not stepping aside and having to be let go would be his legacy and his relationship with the alumni. His refusal to replace Greg Davis hasn't in any way been forgotten. Mack has a tendency to look myopically at things and not keep the long term best interests of the program in mind. If he doesn't leave at the end of this season, regardless of how the season turns out, a number of alumni who are on the fence about how they feel about Mack will turn against him and Mack won't be welcomed on campus for many, many years (if ever gain). He has had his time, the game has largely passed him by and its time for him to go.

Oh cool, an AD who doesn't want to hire or fire coaches.
don't know the man, but doubt that's the case. but, i don't blame him if he doesn't want to his first day to be "Welcome to Bellmont Mr. Luck. Here's your office, here's your Longhorn coffee mug, the bathroom is down the hall. Oh, and Mack's waiting in the lobby, you have to fire him today and he won't go quietly. Have a good day!'

It's like the decision has already been made that Mack is gone and Luck wants it announced so as Fuddy stated he is not caught up in a media firestorm and be painted as "the Bad Guy".

Folks y'all need to remember the "armchair" fans that get their sports news from the local media outlets have not been following this like The rest of us. If It appears Luck fired Mack and something goes horribly wrong next year, he will be be remembered as Liberty Valance.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see it. This is a premier job and I don't see anyone turning it down because they don't want to be a part of positive change.

Doesn't make much sense to me.

His response:

OL: You know, I just can't do it

Bellmont: Why, Oliver? We all love Mack, he's a great guy. But it has to be done. We need new blood and a new culture. We thought you understood this??

OL: No, I can fire Mack that's not the problem. It's that my bathroom is down the hall. Best of luck to you.
